ARTISTS WHO SUCESSFULLY REINVENTED THEMSELVES.
September 12, 2008 01:13AM
I was just reading about eric carmens dui arrest and was thinking about how he had moderate sucess in power pop with the rasberries which is im sure a band that many in here like. his later solo stuff im fairly sure most of us dont like or are indifferent.
which leads me to my question.
name a few artists who had commercial sucess and than reinvented themselves with more artistic integrity.

here are a few to start.

dion- reinvented himself with a aucoustic guitar n did a lot of folk n blues stuff.
rick nelson- in the late 60s n early 70s put out some good country music and did some great dylan covers.
aimeee mann- started out in till tuesday and her solo stuff although i find to be a mixed bag is def different.
dan zane- dont know if you can say he improved but he has had big sucess as with kids music as opposed to being in the del fuegos.

Lisa Germano

And I'll have to give Everyman another spin before I say Simon Bonney, I seem to recall it not quite doing it for me, although I liked some of it.

Talking Heads "had commercial sucess and than reinvented themselves with more artistic integrity"? Funny, I seem to recall that their music kept reaching a wider audience as their career went on ... but never lacked for artistic integrity, from first to last.

Tori Amos found much more success as a solo artist than with her band Y Kant Tori Read ... and as for integrity, she had nowhere to go but up.

I would say both Tom Tom Club and David Byrne as side projects were successful outside of the typical Heads fanbase, which by the time of Naked was more commerce than art.

I would second Mr. Rotten although like the Beasties and some others that could be mentioned, the initial artistic revival is looooong in the tooth.

The Passengers?

Julien Cope?

Steve Stevens?

Brand X? winking smiley

Dagmar Krause? =P

How about Manfred Mann?

Hey, Erik, glad to have you back. I was wondering what happened to you.
Re: ARTISTS WHO SUCESSFULLY REINVENTED THEMSELVES.
September 12, 2008 05:16PM
yeah, but I wish the latter version of Manfred had enforced better pronunciation on Springsteen's "Blinded by the Light"--that's confounded many a young listener over the year, including myself.

Good to be back...thanks for noticing.

You're welcome, Erik. It was getting a bit lonesome being the only member of the Nation. How's the Van the Man book going?
Re: ARTISTS WHO SUCESSFULLY REINVENTED THEMSELVES.
September 12, 2008 10:34PM
Joe: The Van Morrison thing is in the late stages--actually turned in a manuscript to the publisher but was asked for 10,000 more words (fine by me!). I'm embarking on a book about the work of Cormac McCarthy now for a different publisher. Quite a change of pace. How're things in the witch city?
Re: ARTISTS WHO SUCESSFULLY REINVENTED THEMSELVES.

Erik, things in the Witch City are OK. We're getting ready for the big STEVE convention next month a/k/a Halloween. It's going to be on a Friday night this year, so I'll be hunkered down in the basement after tossing candy to the kiddies.

Which two guys from Fine Young Cannibals? I don't recall any of the three doing anything of note after that band called it a day. Perhaps they did, and I missed it. More details, please?
Re: ARTISTS WHO SUCESSFULLY REINVENTED THEMSELVES.
September 12, 2008 07:27PM
I'm assuming Satch is referring to David Steele and Andy Cox, who went from the English Beat TO the Fine Young Cannibals. None of the Cannibals managed to reinvent themselves after that, although Roland Gift did try his hand at acting.

Didn't those two also have a side project called 'Two Men and a Drum Machine' or something like that? I remember seeing a video back in the `80's and I thought it was said they were in Fine Young Cannibals.
Re: ARTISTS WHO SUCESSFULLY REINVENTED THEMSELVES.
September 21, 2008 11:25PM
Between their stints in The English Beat and FYC, Steele and Cox recorded as 2 Men, a Drum Machine & a Trumpet. Their big 12" from 1987 was "Tired of Getting Pushed Around" (co-produced by the legendary Derrick May). I thought it was brilliant at the time, but, in retrospect drugs may have played a role in that assessment.

Re. the question:

Jeff Tweedy
Brian Wilson
Tanya Donnelly
Damon Albarn

IMO, the Fine Young Cannibals was a step down for Steele and Cox, in terms of artistic integrity.

Re: ARTISTS WHO SUCESSFULLY REINVENTED THEMSELVES.
September 12, 2008 08:07PM
I agree, but as far as reinventing themselves, I suppose it would be considered successful. It may not have been as good, but it was at least respectable.
Re: ARTISTS WHO SUCESSFULLY REINVENTED THEMSELVES.
September 12, 2008 08:09PM
I would agree too and think this thread concept could easily be reversed... =)

Ian McCulloch, Roger Waters, Rolling Stones solo...

Re: ARTISTS WHO SUCESSFULLY REINVENTED THEMSELVES.
September 12, 2008 08:12PM
"Rolling Stones solo..."

I dunno...I'd take Keith Richards' Talk is Cheap and Ronnie Wood's Slide on This (or his 70s albums) over anything the Stones have done since Exile On Main Street.

Jagger's solo work, though...brrrr...
Re: ARTISTS WHO SUCESSFULLY REINVENTED THEMSELVES.
September 13, 2008 01:38AM
Still, compared to General Public, International Beat, and various psuedo-Beat incarnations led by Dave and/or Ranking Roger....

Also, Bob Mould had a successful "second life" with Sugar. David Byrne has done well post-Heads as well, even if he's more under the radar nowadays.
Re: ARTISTS WHO SUCESSFULLY REINVENTED THEMSELVES.
September 13, 2008 04:53PM
Bob Mould didn't reinvent himself with Sugar, though - he just refined what he'd been doing with Husker Du. He arguably redefined himself with Workbook, though.

jools holland- always had artistic integrity as the keyboard player in squeeze but kind of reinvented himself with the music show later and played with george harrison clapton and many other big names.
mark wahlberg- started out as marky mark and the funky bunch and from that became a real good actor.
the breeders- not saying they are better or worse than the pixies but the deal sisters did a great job being their own women.
penelope houston- started out with the avengers who were a punk band and her later solo stuff mixes country folk and are extremely melodic.
chuck prophet- was in green on red but now is a solo artist who is a real good guitarist songwriter n singer in his own rite. more bluesy

"X's john doe the actor"

Hey this reminds me.
John Doe IS in the film A Matter Of Degrees - John Doe has a song called A Matter Of Degrees but it's NOT on the soundtrack - The Throwing Muses also have a song called A Matter Of Degress and it IS on the soundtrack.
What's all that about?

The Underworld:from vapid verse/chorus/verse dance pop to groundbreaking drum and bass laden electronica.

My Bloody Valentine:from Birthday Party/Cramps inspired doomers to soundwarping blitzrockers.

Consider Bob Mould is now a gay icon and dance/electronica DJ in Washington, I'd say he reinvented himself.

David Johannson reinvented himself as Buster Poindexter.

Rod Stewart reinvented himself as a lounge singer, but maybe he always was one.

Madonna, as we all know, keeps reinventing herself. She's more hands off now, and her music is increasingly created by other people.

Jello Biafra is now a spoken-word artist / comedian.

LL Kool J went from big-time rapper to tinsel-town actor.

It's too nauseating to mention what Flava Flav is doing these days.

nauseating to admit i actually watched the flav roast, but there was one really good line:

"you know why chuck d didn't show up tonight?"

"the d stands for dignity"

and whose line was that anyway?

patton oswalt, who has successfully reinvented himself as a comedian after his previous stint as a really tall midget.

no chris knox jokes, please.

it might just be a coincidence. i would chalk it up to that.
that john doe song is great and its funny that i just listened to it twice last night.
love this set of lyrics especcially- " some people say they like to hear me talk, cause i tell them whats wrong, but i dont say much more than a man in a bar shooting his mouth off.
promises are broken with a yes sir no sir or we will see.
changes will come to steal what we love
call it disease but i know its a matter of degrees.

Hasn't she been doing the spoken-word thing for about 20 years now?

Actually, she'd fall into the category of "artists who mercifully reinvented themselves."
