Paired Tastes 3: Art & Music

I was reading this article:
[www.juxtapoz.com]

and I liked the concept of the musical equivalent of visual artists, but I’m not sure I agree with his examples. Salvador Dali = Zappa? Hmm…

I’m sure you all could come up with good examples, but I’m a-feared we would be too literal. Like his example of Futura = Suicide. Of course, I remember Futura’s appearance on The Clash song “Overpowered By Funk” so I have those two yoked together in my mind. (Like the way many of us would lump Warhol in with the VU, even if there isn’t anything really Pop Art about The Velvets.) So maybe Suicide is a better choice..?

My obvious choice: Magritte and Robyn Hitchcock, as they both liked men with lightbulb heads.

Banksy = Negativland

Alexander Calder = Esquivel

H.R. Giger = Chrome. Or maybe early Killing Joke

Robert Williams = The Cramps

Right, HR Giger’s ‘biomechanical’ approach certainly sounds like any number of industrial/waxtrax type artists.

It took me many years to appreciate Impressionism, but now I’m really taken with how the artists of that school were able to give you the sense (or impression) of the things they were depicting without clearly-defined lines.

Likewise I see many of the shoegaze artists the same way, a type of aural Impressionism, where they’re using splashes of sound to give you the impression of the song ( as opposed to the hyper-realism of say power pop).

Or The Residents, or Pere Ubu

Wouldn't Pere Ubu = Alfred Jarry (not an artist but he wrote the play that the band got the name from).

Max Ernst would work for Pere Ubu (he painted a famous Ubu Imperator, plus he's a surrealist too)

Would not Duchamp and the Dadaists be paired with the group originally known as the Bonzo Dog Dada Band ?

The Pre-Raphaelites + the contemporary artists who were inspired by them - Cocteau Twins.

I once conceived a Powerpoint project showing Pre-Raph paintings with CT's music in the background, but I checked Youtube and someone beat me to the punch. Perhaps I will revisit that project in the future.

[editor's note:] I have mentioned CT at least a hundred times on this forum, I am working to limit the references, it's getting to be a bit monotonous (even if they are one of my fave bands of all time).
