Verlaine kills TV for me.
I have listened to MM for so many years trying to get to the greatness that is proclaimed about it. The music is exquisite, but the vocals and lyrics just are a turn off. For some reason, a few of the songs work better than others, but as a whole it can't live up to the hype.

Marquee Moon is such a Trouser Press album. I got it at an Army Navy Store/Pawn Shop in the late 80's. I had studied one of those TP books and recognized the name. I own the latest CD edition and I still can't quite get into it.

Sting (if he's still considered "alternative"). Apart from his nails-on-chalkboard voice, what was with that weird accent he used to affect - was that supposed to be Jamaican (Ja-fakin') or sumthin? "Yooo don' have to poot on de red laaaaat..."

Verlain never bothered me. But Dylan always did. Probly 'cause Verlaine's a better guitarist.

I'll cast a vote for Perry Farrell. I always liked JA's music just fine, but could never listen to 'em for very long because of that pretentious, caterwauling fuck. My wife unfortunately has the same reaction to Jello and the DK's.

I'm surprised J. Mascis hasn't been mentioned yet.

However, if they're alternative rock fold (which, admittedly, is debatable), the winner is Bernard Sumner of New Order/Electronic.

Mascis & Sumner both get points, however, for making their limitations into something interesting...

I agree that Mascis is a pretty poor "singer", but in the context of Dinosaur's music, I think it works. Same goes for Curt Kirkwood, for that matter.

Vedder, Vedder, Vedder Oh whir o whir kinma beeber ber? The radio where I work is tuned to Z-Rock, so I get all of the worst shit over and over and over. The other approved station is oldies, which is now the disco era instead of 60's rock. Stipe is awful , too.
