C, S & N aren't my cup of tea (at least without Y), but IF I COULD ONLY REMEMBER MY NAME is an excellent solo album. It could almost pass for a private-press psych-folk album of the period.

Crosby's folk-styled music isn't my thing -- nor is anybody else's -- but his recordings with The Byrds hold up very well. Rest in peace, David.

Odd, I just mentioned CSN in the Beck thread. Yes I have their records ($1 each used) and no, don’t adore them… but if you want to scratch that itch, they were a talented act for certain.

Steevee’s right, ‘ if I could only…’ is a swell album.

One thing you can say about him… he was a character. Mention his name and everyone conjures up their view of the guy. In this age of ‘faceless rock stars’, the man somehow stood out.

Because of my age… and the age of my musical touchstones…. I just know that this year and all subsequent years will be filled with unwelcome obits.

Not a fan of the man or his music. He certainly lived longer than anyone would have expected in 1985. So, good for him for turning his life around after his prison stint. Otherwise, my parents taught me that if you don't have anything nice to say, it's better to keep your mouth shut.

I guess I should give the guy credit, though, for being bold enough to write the ménage à trois song "Triad." For all the talk about how much rock music was free to expand during the "summer of love," this song turned out to be more freedom than his fellow Byrds could handle. They did perform it at least once, and recorded it as well, but declined to release it. That decision led, in part, to Crosby's departure from the band at the end of 1967. The Byrds' recording of "Triad" saw its first official release twenty years later ... long after Prince's "When You Were Mine" had been released, and subsequently become a standard.

I've always been more of a S & Y guy than a C & N guy but I agree with Stevee, IF I COULD ONLY REMEMBER MY NAME is an absolute classic and well worth your time. That plus a few ace Byrds songs not called "Mind Gardens"...
