Current YouTube Fixations

Seriously, how awesome is YouTube to relieve boredom?

Just this past week I found a tremendous performance of Peter Perrett doing "Woke Up Sticky" from 1996. I consider myself a fairly insane Only Ones/Perrett fan and I'd never seen this. It's maddening to me that a guy could disappear for 15 years - reappear and make such a strong record, and then...........disappear again.

Also, digging lots of Joy Division who must be one of the most fascinating bands to watch play I can think of. Everyone is so focused on their role - riveting stuff.

If that's not enough someone posted the entire 20 minute film "Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe" , which indeed is Werner Herzog fulfilling his promise to eat his shoe if Errol Morris completes the film "Gates of Heaven". It's really something to see.

I second the YouTube endorsement. I have to stay away from it at work or I'll never get anything done.

A buddy of mine sent me links to the performances by the Monks from German TV. Pretty amazing:

I'll have to look for the Perrett clip - I'd love to see him in action.

Here's the Perret clip from '96 - sorry should have included it with my original post.

Enjoy.

I've seen some pretty amazing stuff on YouTube, like the Rolling Stones Rice Krispies commercial, the Monks on Beat Club, Patto, John Coltrane, Miles Davis and a short on how 78s were recorded & made using a Duke Ellington recording session. It kinda reminds me of the early days of MTV, but better in that instead of wading through a bunch of crappy videos, you can choose what cool stuff you want to see & if you can find something there by an obscure band.

However, one thing that's in the back of my mind is how long will this last, especially hearing how various media corportaions are using or have plans to use YouTube to promote their products.

I sure wish someone would put up the Tom Verlaine video from the album Flashlight. I can't remember if it was Bomb or Cry Mercy Judge. Saw it one time on MTV so it's gotta be out there somewhere.

There's so much copyrighted stuff there; it's only a matter of time before it gets some heat.

The Online Guitar Archive survived for years until just recently.

That was from a SNL Halloween show duing their bleak (unfunny) period in the mid-80's. I remember seeing it and thinking how silly it was to see the slam dancers. It seemed so staged. Even the abrupt ending seemed planned. Many years later, I saw Fear and Lee Ving still seemed proud about that appearance. During the encore, he yelled how they were the only band to "shut Saturday Night Live down!"

That SNL Halloween shop w/Fear was actually broadcast in 1980 or '81, just after the original cast left and before they relaized Eddie Murphy had talent (Charles Rocket was a member of that particular cast). Heff was right, it was unfunny & NBC was about to cancel it before turning to Eddie Murphy. Also, the guest host for the Fear Halloween show was John Belushi.

One of my favorite guilty pleasure power pop favorites from early MTV:

The Hilly Michaels video for Calling All Girls.

Talk about the ash heap of history, never thought I'd see that again.

Hilly Michaels! Now there was a guy with a disappointing second album!

Pretty cool that he merited a TP entry. Gone but not (completely) forgotten.

There's a great XTC promo for Oranges and Lemons that features a history of the band done with sock puppets, and Andy and Colin's voices. You can also find the gig where Andy started the show, but staggered off because of stage fright. Watching old Sparks appeareances on Beat Club and Top of the Pops is fun, as well.

I'm very angry with You Tube for being so fantastic. Today I wasted two whole hours watching Borat and Ali G when I should have been doing something else, seeing as I'd just gotten home from spending 10 days in jail. I mean, take a bath or something. Eat. Drink. But NO. I sat on my ass in front of the computer and watched You Tube. Started out with Mystery Science Theater's shorts, then gravitated to Borat. Then somehow, 'in his prime' Marc Bolan /T Rex footage.

Crackwhore only for music on You Tube,
Patrish
