Nice. I remember going to a funeral a couple years back. The woman who died was very old (95+) and was my Sunday school teacher when I was a wee lad. During the eulogy, one of her granddaughters got up and said something like: "I'll never forget the times, sitting at the kitchen table with grammy, playing Husker Du...." I had a brief moment of extreme cognitive dissnonance before I realized that she had meant the board game, of course. I almost flipped my wig!

I might have burst into laughter. Which would have been pretty uncool at a funeral. Who's to say she wasn't a fan of the band? "Oh, I do so enjoy 'New Day Rising', but 'Zen Arcade' is simply grand!'

More delights to amaze and astound:

There's another potential band name on the Carbona ad - Color Run Remover. And I just might start me a psychedelic space rock band and call it Astounding Science Fiction.

These are great, but I don't get:
The Loud Family
Visqueen
Powderworks
Astounding SciFi
Carbona

What are those referencing?

I've read about this and have long wanted to see the comic from which it came. Thanks for digging this up!

I've always wanted a version of that comic book panel large enough to print out and frame. Julian Cope included a dinky b&w version in Head On, but I'd need one that's survice being enlarged to about 22 x 28 or so.

...

BTW. I'm enjoying the image of the Bauhaus house band very much. It's chilling. And macabre.

I imagine they're at the crescendo of a horn-heavy version of "Antonin Artaud." How does on say "Those Indians wank on his bones" in German?

Didn't know that about Mott. Reminds me of where Joy Divison got their name:

The Bauhaus school even had a band. But they don't look too goth:

Fun fun fun. Thanks to all of you who posted these - I knew about perhaps 3/4 of these but not all. I would like someone to find an old 19th century newspaper called "The Negro Observer," which I'm sure must have been the inspiration for the Butthole Surfers song of the same name. Not sure why I believe that, but it sounds plausible.

Couldn't find "The Negro Observer", but that reminded me of another old publication, one that would go well in an exhibit next to the Chichi Rodriquez golf ball package in my first post:

This is one of the more enlightening threads I've seen here in a while. A special thanks to Fab for the Astounding Science Fiction cover and the circus poster.
