I always liked the trumpet on "Dead or Alive" by John Cale.

The Cows have been known to bang out a good trumpet ostinato to devastating effect.

Paul Westerberg' Trumpet Clip is the only song that makes Eventually worth owning. The Mekons blew a tuneless trumpet at the end of their best record.

"Too high ...
Too far ...
Too soon ...

... you saw The Whole of the Moon."

Wasn't there a formula to this sort of thing?

Verse?
Chorus?
Verse?
(((trumpet solo?)))
Chorus?
(((bad trumpet solo?)))

And yet I'm okay with that one.

Also, the solo in XTC's "Extrovert".

The Cure's "Hot Hot Hot" (don't confuse it w/ the Poindexter thang, okay?) featured what sounded like a trumpet. I remember Lol Tolhurst miming along to it in the video ... before he was shown the door not too soon after.

Tolhurst was already a dead man anyway. Watch the video for "Why Can't I Be You" ... think of words that sound like "can't"... and notice exactly who is left holding the enormous lips.

Coded intentions. That's my theory. I like it a lot.

Love - 'Alone Again Or' - I have to say that I prefer the Damned's version of this (which has trumpets also) but that is probably because I'd heard their version long before the original (first time I head that was in 'Bottle Rocket')

Love - 'Alone Again Or'

The moment on the early 2000's "Forever Changes" concert/DVD where the trumpet starts is magical. The crowd can't believe what they're hearing, and go apeshit.Heff wrote:

I'm glad Shipbuilding was recognized. To me that song was the point where Elvis went from being one of the best songwriters of his generation to one of the best songwriters ever.

I'm sure someone will tell me that Pretenders' version of "I Go To Sleep" has a horn that is not a trumpet.

What about "She's a Rainbow?"

The only thing "Touch Me" blows, is dead bears.

A little late to the game, but one of my favorite Wreckless Eric songs -- and I have a ton of favorite Wreckless Eric songs -- is "Excuse Me."

It's got a Latin trumpet flourish at a few points in the song. Lovely moments in a terrific song.

Connells' "Over There" (or was that a synth doing the trumpet parts? Either way definitely one of the best things they've done).

Steve Sidwell plays some fine trumpet on XTC's "Easter Theatre" (from Apple Venus Volume 1). Guy Barker plays trumpet and flugelhorn on that CD's closing track, "The Last Balloon."

Mr. Barker also plays trumpet on a few tracks on Nonsuch. Mark Isham does the honors on a few songs on Oranges & Lemons.

Dig those mariachi horns on "Red Sun" by Thin White Rope. There'd just have to be some trumpet mixed in there somewhere.

The alternate version kicks ass and takes names as well. But it has no horns and so cannot be mentioned here again.

Shipbuilding. Actually, Elvis Costello added the TKO Horns to his touring band after Punch the Clock, resulting in some great trumpet-assisted versions of his early catalog.

Listening right now to Silver Lining by Stiff Little Fingers. Love that song.

When I saw EC on the Goodbye Cruel World tour, I believe he had the Phantom Horns with him, which was Gary Barnacle on sax and Johnny Thirkell on trumpet. I think that's who he had with him - I know Barnacle was on that tour when I saw them, but it may not have been both guys.

Thirkell also did the trumpet part for "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves.

One of my favorite Church songs, in part because of the great use of horns.
