Re: hope i die before i get old

hope i die before i get old

I was reading some of the interviews on rockcritics.com and read a few things that Richard Meltzer had to say. And I intend on tracking his books down too. He sounds fascinating and marvelous. But I can't get it out of my head, where he said he now hates rock. I hope this doesn't ever happen to me. So I figure after I read all his books and stuff, I'll be able to recognize signs of encroaching disolutionment. I know it's hard to keep up with the modern sounds and all but eradication?
I wonder, would I feel differently about rock if I knew the members of some of my favorite bands/albums (as Meltzer did)?
That might be the toughest thing for a critic to do, (besides earning a living) separating that line of objectivity and subjectivity.
Maybe that's why some critics relate more to dead composers after all.
Unfortunately, most so called critics, aren't. They are merely greasing wheels with their greasy hands.
Whatever, Richard Meltzer is still a truly happenin guy.

he's one of a kind--the funniest rock writer? i'm not sure how much he "hates" rock: i know from doug gillard that RM loves GBV; i know he's been in a few bands himself, so...

oh well...

here's an interview

Probably a transient disgust recorded in print. I hated jazz once for ten years.

I think I still hate jazz but then again I don't have any Blossom Dearie albums. I wonder which album of her's would be a good place to introduce myself with? Anyone...

i assumed you were kidding, cuz if you're counting on blossom to save the jazz for ya, it's already lost.

i was more thinking of something that might turn a jazz-hater into maybe slightly less of a hater...baby steps, ya know? hehe

blossom certainly ain't up to that task! also seems a pretty good guess that mobley and stitt have already failed if that dearie chick is seen as a last resort.

right off the jazz bat, i enjoy thelonius monk. there was a compilation done by rock n rollers such as nrbq, todd rundgren and frampton. maybe that'll help. i think jazz can be snobby - at least bebop in the fifties, ie john coltrane, most probably looked down upon punker-like rock n rollers, ie saxophonists dell who played with elvis, who wailed and wheezed while doing a fish flopping action on their backs on the stage floor to simple chords. then again, there are singers, musicians who cross it all.
there is: carmen macrae.

I am a rock guy almost exclusively (Miles, Coltrane, etc. tend to grow mold on my CD shelf) but I have recently grown to love swing music, especially Duke Ellington. I just recently bought the triple CD "The Blanton Webster Years" and it has dominated my car CD player. 60+ songs and every single damn one of them ranges between 2:50 and 3:30, just like any good pop band! Might be a good way for you to hate jazz less... It worked for me!
