Great single releases that were a little overlooked due to various reasons but often because it was preceeded by a monster hit or it came out between albums.

Echo & The Bunnymen-The Back of Love

PiL-Seattle

Comsat Angels-Eye of the Lens (to a lesser extent as it became available on the CD version of Waiting For A Miracle).

Talking Heads-Cross Eyed and Painless

The Jam-Funeral Pyre

The Triffids-Beautiful Waste

The Beat-Tears of a Clown

Hunters & Collectors-Judas'Sheep (great video too)

Violent Femmes-Ugly

Leftfield - Release The Pressure

"Funeral Pyre" is not only my favorite Jam song, but I think it's one of the best singles ever released. The sound of that song is really special - with those ferocious drums and the way the (great) lyrics come hurtling out at you ("what with today's high prices!") - is just mesmerizing stuff.

I'd add "You've Got to Pay" by the Only Ones to the list as well.

I've always thought it was odd that none of the singles from Blondie's EAT TO THE BEAT broke into the US top-20. They were about as big as any band could be at that time, but the public just didn't warm up to the singles off that album. Which in the case of "Dreaming" was just plain insanity.

The other singles off the album were, I believe, "The Hardest Part," "Union City Blue" and "Atomic," which was a massive club hit but didn't make much of a splash on the pop charts. Why "Slow Motion" wasn't a single is beyond me.

Fountains of Wayne were supposed to release "Bright Future in Sales" as a single but never did, possibly because of the inclusion of the word "shit" in the chorus

Agree - love that snare.

Good call on "Release The Pressure".

I believe "The Walk" was the first single to be released from The Eurythmics 'Sweet Dreams....' album. The title track followed.

"Superblaster" was Curve's second single from the '92 album 'Cuckoo'. A video was filmed and aired but the official single, which contained 2 non-lp tracks, was retracted. To this day the non-promo version is still a highly sought after EP amongst fans.
