The women who comprised this eccentric New York trio played drums, keyboards (nothing fancy or high-tech), bass and ukulele. They also sang–such numbers as “The Shah Song,” lyrics like “Don’t be afraid to be boring” and adaptations of “Bert” Brecht. Mostly, though, Beat It Down consists of skimpy, dada music that is baldly amateurish but charming. The Y Pants offer no stylistic pretensions, merely highly idiosyncratic music for aficionados of the arcane, intelligent and delightful.
