Mutants

  • The Mutants (MSI/Quality) 1982

More than one band has used this name; these particular Mutants had been active in the San Francisco area for years before releasing this LP. Ex-art students, the septet’s personnel hadn’t changed much from their early days, but there had been a lot of maturing, from a peppy, loose-limbed Mott the Hoople/Rolling Stones sound to a tighter, poppier, modish style even more suitable to the sci-fi lyrics. The tunes are consistently pleasing, with Frederic Fox playing the dandified Philip Marlow of the cosmic lounge circuit against a chirpy female chorus, and many of the lyrics, for all their jokey fantasy, unexpectedly hit home with more zap than Space Invaders.
