Funkapolitan

The name says it all: these eight multi-ethnic Britons play modern rhythmic dance music that doesn’t skimp on melody, lyrics or invention. Produced by August (Kid Creole) Darnell, the eight long cuts on Funkapolitan bear some resemblance to other likeminded neo-soul/funk machines like ABC. Funkapolitan’s unique listenability stems from myriad percussion instruments and no horns — synthesizers and varied vocals add subtle shading to otherwise straight thump-thump-thump numbers.
