Avant Gardeners

  • Avant Gardener(s)
  • Avant Gardener EP (UK Virgin) 1977
  • Dig It (Italian Appaloosa) 1980
  • Church of the Inner Cosmos (UK Appaloosa) 1984

It’s unclear how this frivolous English new wave trio, known in the singular when originally signed to Virgin, ended up with an Italian album that mates all four tracks from their UK EP (like “Strange Gurl [sic] in Clothes” and “Bloodclat Boogie Baby”) with a version of Roky Erickson’s “Two Headed Dog,” a porno pisstake called “Johnny Cash” and “Never Turn Your Back on a Silicon Chip,” as well as other semi-inspired bits of doggerel. It’s pretty funny and not badly played; an odd footnote to the class of ’77.
