I'd forgotten that Noel Redding had died. So they ARE the first major group all of whose members have died. I thought the Mamas and the Papas would be first to go.by larryepke
I'll nominate Bruce The Boss for the overrated slot.by larryepke

The original Will the Circle Be Unbroken album by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and a bunch of veteran country musicians is terrific, though it's style isn't the type for a lot of people here, I reckon. Any takers for Woodstock?by larryepke
Madonna doesn't have many defenders here. Her shtick represents a lot of what went wrong in the 1980s. Michael Jackson fits that too. Emerson, Lake and Palmer and Yes seem to define everything that's wrong with prog. Tom Petty may be my least favorite musician who ever appeared on the cover of TP.by larryepke
Though he's not in the TP reviews, he did have an autodiscography in issue 15, according to the mag index, and three subsequent album reviews.by larryepke
QuoteIt's been quite a while now since I've seen any of the music magazines do any sort of "Women in Rock" special issue (Seems like Rolling Stone used to do one at least once a year). Do they even care about rock anymore?by larryepke
I'm old enough to have owned Never Mind the Bollocks... on lp, 8-track, cassette and CD. I have The Clash three times - UK lp, US lp and CD. London's Calling in lp, cassette and cd. And there are others. Usually I justify getting the CD because something's been added.by larryepke

In the Police song "Message in a Bottle" 100 million bottles (presumeably with the same message in them) wash up on the shore. Randy Newman's "Sail Away" is an attempt to get Africans to volunteer to be enslaved. The lyric "little wog" is a giveaway.by larryepke

The Byrds and Fleetwood Mac both did songs named "Why?" Needless to say, they were different songs.by larryepke

Inherent in the question is the idea that the words, the phrasing, the cultural references are key. But I would contend that the MUSIC is more important in many cases, which is why the Clash did as well as they did here, as well as XTC for example. Now in a case where the words DO matter, I don't "get" the Bonzo Dog Band or GRIMMS. But I know they are popular with many of TP'by larryepke
I thought I was the only person in the world who remembered "Open Up Your Door" by Richard and the Young Lions until it appeared on the Nuggets box set. That band never got to release an album. The Residents have lots of things that relate to their albums but aren't on the albums, like "Satisfaction", "The Residents Play the Beatles" and "Discomo", bby larryepke

I'll admit to having very little familiarity with Facebook, but it seems that 1) these images are rather small (large index card size, rather than as big as the originals) and 2) I can't find a way to save them on my computer. Zappa's discography includes dozens of live albums, none of which just repeat some studio tracks. (That's both good and bad.) I got very interested in FZ from the live material on Weasels Ripped My Flesh, and would recommend the Shut Up and Play Your Guitar series. Much of the rest is VERY dodgy, what with the over-supply of his humor on so many of the live performances. The Residentsby larryepke
Don't forget Norman Salant. His song on the America Underground cassette was one of its many highlights.by larryepke
The Residents can't be summed up in any Greatest Hits album, since each album is a unique creation. (And, of course, they had no hits.) Still, the gang themselves have made some attempts at self-summation, like Give Us Your Poor..., which end up being original Resident objects themselves. Dylan's three Greatest Hits packages would serve as fine introductions to such people who donby larryepke
If you dig On the Corner you should definitely check out the Soul Jazz compilation New Thing. It's quite enlightening to see how the soul scene so influenced Mulawi, Sun Ra, Alice Coltrane, Ayler and others.by larryepke
