Upstate NY… so in reality I was likely catching it on a sister station in Montreal or Toronto? I was obsessed with being anywhere other than my town, so I’d twiddle the radio knobs until I heard something come through the static (no digital readouts then). ‘Brave new waves’ always said it was from Vancouver, which I had no idea was above the opposite coast! EARLY 80s metal… before it was calby Bip
The two battles I had to fight: I lived in a podunk town, so there was no way to hear much of anything. I bought the Police debut based solely on magazine reviews and how the cover looked stark and cool. I hadn’t even heard ‘Roxanne’. There were no college stations near me. ( sometimes on a clear night I could get a Canadian radio show out of Vancouver that would play the good stuff…’braveby Bip
Guilty confession about these three albums. I borrowed all three CD’s from the local library, burned them onto blank cd-r’s, and then never listened to any of them, ever. …I’m not sure if I feel more guilty about ‘stealing’ them like that, or for never listening to any of them. Maybe your post can be a way in for me. Guilty confession number two. When I was 16-17 (early 80s) some friendsby Bip
What a great thread. I arrived expecting a recap of EC live and instead learned about the maniacal evil genius of Andy Griffith. Love this site…although sometimes you guys make me wonder how many rocks I’ve lived under! (The only Elvis show I saw was a solo acoustic with a spinning wheel… wherever it landed was the song he’d play next. Haven’t see any of Andy’s ‘evil’ movies… yet.)by Bip
I’ve never been a comics guy. As a previous vinyl geek I can appreciate the appeal of comics, it just never ‘got to me’. That said, thanks to breno and wasproxy for your posts. I thought they were both well-written and interesting….they drew me in and made me want to learn a little more about this Shooter fellow. Kudos!by Bip
That makes sense. I’m still not sure that “whip it” really benefitted from any mtv play. That video is just… too… disturbing. I still feel uncomfortable every time I see it. (I understand that’s their intent). I think the synth bass on that was just right place, right time. Kinda like Numan’s “cars”by Bip
Never anywhere near the US radio top 40, but they had heavy coverage upon release of Entertainment! In the magazines…. TP, Creem, rolling stone, etc all would’ve covered them (not on the cover, though). I loved them the minute I heard them at 14. 45 years later, feel the same. Really a terrific band.by Bip
I have no real interest in the band, but am shocked (pleasantly) their lineup was unchanged all that time. And ‘twilight zone’ was absolutely one of the best videos of the early early mtv…. I remember it following something like the Members ‘working girl’ quite nicely.by Bip
Ha…well let me balance your tale with one of my own, from just yesterday. Girl in her early 20’s works in our office. We chat occasionally about current pop music (Taylor and the like). She mentioned she’d been getting into older, punky stuff lately. “Oooh, like what?” “Linkin Park”by Bip
Freekin’ Parade magazine… I haven’t seen one in years but my memory of the letters section is this: “Dear Parade- what is Barry Manilow up to these days? -Tom F. in Cretin, Ind.” “Funny you should ask, Tom… Barry’s just putting the finishing touches on his new album of Broadway standards and will be featured on ABC’s ‘Dancing with this Stars’ Tuesday 8pm EST” THIS KIND OF INANE CRAP Eby Bip
Enjoyed listening. Astounding that 60 years on he’s still willing to graciously answer these types of Who-related questions. I was always much more of a fan of his early 80s solo work, the Who being overplayed staples of dreaded FM ‘classic rock’ stations when I was 13-14. (It was the TP issue with the Who song guide that got me to start appreciating their ‘deeper cuts’). Thanks for sby Bip
I told you I’m selling off my record collection and literally going through each of the 9,000 titles and trying to determine values. So much is going in my “$3 each, 4 for $10, buy 10 or more for $2 each” boxes. All my Split Enz just went in that pile. Most Stiff artists sadly went there, too. As I go through sometimes I’ll look at reviews here (why did I buy this in the first place?) Surby Bip
Such a timely topic…. I was just listening to the Staples Singers ‘I’ll take you there’ and thinking how that skittering rat a tat drumming musta influenced Adam and the Ants AND. trap-style hip hop more recently. (I may be nuts…) Genre delineation is one of my favorite yet most fruitless exercises. I’m a fan of the 80’s synth-bass sound and have dozens of no-name r&b albums from that eby Bip
No risk involved in listening to Espionage… they’re the type of cheeseball no-name unheard-of new-wave / poorman’s-AOR that make up a shocking amount of my record collection…. For me as a listener, I’ve recently. had more fun finding these types of innocuous bands (who somehow got on major labels) instead of listening to Husker Du again!by Bip
Aah I’m not crazy. Thnx zoo!by Bip
Maybe I’m imagining this…. but was there a situation where Mike released a song but the video was younger/cute guys in an attempt to stir interest in his song ( or maybe get a hit just because people thought it was a hot new band)??by Bip
Funny… that was the SAME thing I thought when I saw this set list. Grapes of wrath request?! (Hits close to home as no one’s been buying the $2 copies of my grapes of wrath records….where is the love)by Bip
What’s left to say? The class act beat behind the Blonde, respected by all who saw or heard him.by Bip
I’ve mentioned elsewhere that I’m selling off my records? This lp has been in my $2 bin for three shows now, a nice copy, and IT WILL NOT SELL!!by Bip
Well done Delvin Delvin done well …. nice set!by Bip
Not sure if it’s helpful to the cause or not, but I have petitioned to get several of the TP titles to be picked up by my local library. As an aside, I’m reading ‘they just seem a little wierd’ by Doug Brod which I checked out of the library. I’m not far into it, but there’s been several quotes from Ira and many mentions of Binky Philips and the Planets.by Bip
I think I do this everytime I read an article about an unfamiliar band…in my head I try to guess what they sound like. Certainly did this a lot in the TP magazine days. Likewise I’d do it when thumbing through records and you’d try to guess their sound from the album cover. That would be an interesting topic, bands who sound nothing like (or most like) their cover art…. I’ve likely mentby Bip
May take all of us to blow out all those candles on the cake…salut TP!by Bip
I appreciate so much your inputs on this. Removing (not adding) records from my home goes against EVERY natural impulse I’ve had my whole life. This decision was a big deal. But I cannot continue to treat my living space like a public library. Honestly, I’m the only patron. I can’t do that to my family….they aren’t equipped to deal with such a ridiculous collection if I croaked today.by Bip
Have (hate) to admit I don’t listen to as much punk as I did 45 years ago. And when I do, it’s usually to relisten to bands/albums I know… not to seek out the current punk that I know is out there. Now it’s more I ‘appreciate it more than I listen to it’ which must sound as lame as it feels to type it. But I have heard and liked several of the acts BCE mentioned, so maybe there’s hope fby Bip
Just read on pitchfork a review of an album called ‘springboard: the early unrecorded songs’by Bip
BTW, I see quite a few copies of trouser press flexi’s selling on discogs. Those (along with my original mags) may be something I take to the grave (or at least as far as the funeral home!)by Bip
Yes it’s a ridiculous collection occupying my basement alphabetically in shelves.. I’ve NEVER parted with a record before this… only accumulated. And it dawned on me that the cool people who were supposed to come over and marvel at my cool records, well…. They never materialized!by Bip
Sorry Delvin, I don’t sell online. Don’t plan to, as I’m too lazy to figure out grading and to package it. But I DO use discogs to determine what something is worth…. Which I find exhausting. I’ve only done two local record shows… which is the closest I’ll get to having my own record store. I like the interaction and human contact.by Bip
