Is it just me, or is there a dearth of punks criticizing the president ? Could absolutely be I’m out of step with current acts, but there sure was a lot of Reagan bashing in my youth. Gang of 4 has to carry the torch? Maybe current US punks love their leader. Anyway, I enjoyed the brilliant Easter message today.by Bip
Delineating genres is ridiculous… but good fun. I don’t think Seals and Crofts were even proto- ‘yacht rock’. They were clearly “AM gold”, of course…. Like England Dan and John Ford Coley.by Bip
Yay Athens… 52 girls and Pylon!by Bip
I’m the odd man out… I think about music constantly but never really cared if I saw a band live or not. It was always about the recordings for me. I’ve probably been to less than twenty shows in my lifetime. That said, two of those shows were on zwirnm’s list: Squeeze and Elvis. Elvis was doing a solo acoustic thing in the mid-80s where he’d spin a big wheel and play whatever song the arrowby Bip
Hmm… I guess I really only use the site to look up reviews of releases that would be well over decades-old now. I realize the reviews are just one person’s opinion, but I’d like to think if I decided to check out Uriah Heep, a 2-star review vs. a 5-star review would send me in the right direction, at least to start….should I feel the need to check out Uriah heep. I don’t get that from Disby Bip
Sometimes I think I’m the only one who uses it. I’m always shocked by how extensive it is. In the early 2000’s I picked up the book ‘all music guide to jazz’ and it totally took me from uninformed newbie to comfortable explorer with a good understanding of players both big-name and obscure… then I discovered the website. Wow. The website All Music is something I turn to all the time. (by Bip
It was certainly on a whim that I went down a Squeeze rabbit-hole this week… but nice to see so many posts on the band. A couple asides I learned after starting the thread—- John Cale produced their first album (UK Squeeze here in the states, with the muscle guy on the cover). Apparently Cale was tough, making them dump all their planned songs and write new ones on the spot. I never knew thisby Bip
I just came across this book at the local library. You didn’t mention its size … at 850 plus pages it takes up half the shelf! Nice to see they are carrying it. I may take a stab at it. I’ve petitioned for TP titles to be carried in the past… little luck getting them on the shelves so far but several are available as borrowable ebooks through the library (hope that helps, Ira!)by Bip
I’ve been revisiting the music of my youth lately (well, I do it all the time… but more so this week) and have been thinking of Squeeze. We don’t discuss them that often. What are your perceptions of them? Favorite songs / albums? Love / despise them? I read about them incessantly before ever hearing them. They were never gonna get played on radio and I had no mtv early on. My first albby Bip
Thinking of Squeeze today…. Looked it up and was kinda surprised ‘tempted’ never got higher than #49 here in the states.by Bip
I think I agree with breno’s pick of four. I’m not really a fan, but I’d add Oasis… they just always seem to be in the conversation, big act for britpop. Billy Idol I woulda thought was already in. And here’s where I maybe lose my credibility, but when you start looking at Phil Collins’ track record, it’s unbelievable. Song after song after song that I know (him or Genesis) that I just diby Bip
I got the brilliant idea for this thread recently at the gym, which I hadn’t been to in about a year. They have multiple tv’s in front of the treadmills: one was showing Winger’s ‘17’ video (lots of preening and leering) and the tv next to it was showing Epstein footage. So this is proof that maybe the gym ISN’T so good for you. And breno has it right… what a bunch of pathetic scumbags.by Bip
Breno, for shame!! Starz ‘so young so bad’ Stranglers ‘bring on the nubiles’ (again, possibly too self aware) Benny mardones ‘into the night’by Bip
News Flash: one of the biggest revelations of the Epstein files was his secret desire to be a guest DJ on a radio show. I’m not kidding!! He and his good pals were working on the setlist. So far they have: Stray cats ‘sexy and 17’ Winger ‘17’ The babys ’sweet 17’ The cars ‘let’s go’ The police ‘don’t stand so close to me’ (although that one’s a little too self-aware) The knack ‘gooby Bip
Thank you for playing Shoes, who will always be one of my favorite acts.by Bip
The long-lost “troglodyte”by Bip
If you’ve never heard Deathray, their debut was really catchy Cars-ish power pop. I only discovered it because it was a featured artist at a listening booth in a mall music store (fye?) and the Warhol image on the cover intrigued me.by Bip
Never heard of this guy, but kudos to him for finding a way to share it with the world. It’s obvious that if his recordings were left in a cardboard box upon his (hopefully far off) passing, they’d never be heard. No one else has these captured I’m sure. And kudos to Internet Archive for giving him the platform and doing the work required. He kinda ‘killed them with kindness’ on that one!by Bip
Is that the same Danny Hutton who did a version of nik kershaw’s wouldn’t it be good on the pretty in pink soundtrack?by Bip
Whaddya know… nice to see a post starting with RIP and not be about another lost legend! Like my favorite music writing, Simon’s stuff makes me want to keep reading way past bedtime .… sounds like something I’d petition my local library to pick up (that’s my thing I do)by Bip
Same for me breno, it was the pics in TP that introduced me to that guy in the hatby Bip
Ah, the dreaded spousal porta-potty dilemma…dasher of many a concert dream. My days of breathing through my mouth in a porta potty to avoid the aromas are OVER… I don’t care WHO comes to town!by Bip
Had never heard Linda from Work but liked the band’s name enough to jump down the rabbit hole. Rockin’ unit they are. Hasn’t everyone known a Linda from work?by Bip
You said a mouthful there, fleeingbandit. I spent so much teenage lawn mowing money taking a chance on Cocteau twins, Gang of Four , Sex Pistols, you name it… I just wasn’t going to HEAR that music unless I bought it for myself (no college radio in my area).. I think my embrace of physical media is only a function of my age. If I was 15 now? I think I’d just be excited to hear the bands I reby Bip
Me neither, but a friend in college did make me realize it wasn’t all dreck (no drugs required!). Their catalog is deep enough that I could go through short phases of listening every now and then, picking up on new discoveries… even recently. This follows some of the recent conversation…the notion of a ‘dead head’ is slowly waning. But the Dead are an anomaly…I can’t think of too many other aby Bip
Another odd but related thought. Every town has a classical music station. And that IS some OLD music. Why does THAT survive , but not the Tin Pan Alley vaudeville crap? Will ‘classical’ be the only form of music that survives? Longer than hip hop and Elvis/Beatles and (gasp) new wave?by Bip
Yeah, I KNOW what you thought this was about…but consider this a corollary on Mr Fab’s well-named post about the wild.. I’m wondering if you’ve noticed this also: Twenty years ago I could find a ‘music of your life’ station on AM radio that played bing, Perry como, Dean Martin and the like. That’s gone. The station that used to play hits of the 50s-60s -70s has now transitioned to 70s-80sby Bip
So —you suppose Billy Joel was the catalyst or antidote for Kurtis’ erratic behavior? (I suspect a bit of both….)by Bip
This one bristles along quite nicely. Good find!by Bip
Hmmm Mr Fab…..maybe Canal Aunt? Happy holidays all—by Bip
