fade out teases

fade out teases

Listening to 'White Punks on Dope' and when the song fades out and then comes back on strong, I got to thinking. I've always liked this technique - a song ends leaving you wanting more and then lo and behold - your prayers are answered. Does anyone know who and when this started? I can go back to 'Strawberry Fields Forever' but the part after the fade out doesn't really sound like the song.

Thanks!

My favorite bit of fade out trickery is Sparks' "I Predict," in which they confidently predict "and this song will fade out/yes this song will fade out/this song will fade out/I predict" for what seems like several minutes, only to have the song abruptly end without ever fading out.

Doesn't "Some Girls Are Bigger than Others" by the Smiths actually fade out at the beginning of the song and then come back rather than at the end?

Yeah, methinks the Beatles were first. If not "Strawberry Fields", at least "Helter (I got blisters on my fingers) Skelter."

This thread made me remember the part in Nicholson Baker's book "Vox" (which was otherwise not quite as interesting as the hoopla would have had you believe, even though I'm a fan of his) where the protagonist is talking about fadeouts with the phone sex worker. It's been more than a decade since I read the book, but as I recall, the guy is describing how he'd become obsessed with, as he listened to songs with fadeout endings, trying to detect just the precise moment where the engineer starts to turn the knob to fade it out. That image has stuck with me for a long time now....

I think Ize Of The World off the new Strokes completely cuts right off seemingly right in the middle of the song.

In terms of fading out and then suddenly coming right back, "Please Play This Song On The Radio" by NOFX comes immediately to mind.

"(I'm) The End Of The Family Line" when Morissey comes back in to repeat the lyric

"Marque Moon" fades and repeats the intro ( at least on the vinly version I have)

Madis, I don't mean to be nitpicky about it ... but I'd describe the "fade-out" toward the end of "Marquee Moon" as more a matter of the band's arrangement and sense of dynamics, than a matter of studio manipulation.

BTW, the song does that on the CD too.

Can anyone speak to the "legend" that the studio version of "Marquee Moon" actually is the basic, "bed" take, and when Andy Johns played it back for the band, they decided it was perfect the way it is, with no overdubs or re-takes?

All I know is that supposedly Billy Ficca didn't even know they were recording at the time.

It IS perfect, no doubt about that.

And actually, on the vinyl version, the song fades out when Verlaine's vocals begin on the second go round, but on cd they complete the entire first verse the second time, then end the song.

the vinyl and cd endings of "Venus de Milo" are different too.

The Smiths' "There is a light. . ." does a fade tease at the *beginning* of the song.

Doesn't Radiohead's "Black Star" (Bends) also have an opening fade?

I wouldn't even bring this up, but is was watching/listening to "music choice" on warner digital cable earlier, and over the hills and far away by led zepplin did the fade out thing, and I was reminded of good classic rock radio. Or rock radio before it was classic.

then they played T. Petty's don't come around here and asserted on the tv screen that somebody named scotty thurston played in both tp and th hb's and Ig and the Stgs. huh? they later felt is was important that scotty thurston was born in 1952. Is this a big computer glitch, is my memory shot, I refuse to leave my chair and check all those albums because I don't believe a word of it.

I'll stay here in my chair listening to "classic rock" off of my tv and remember band members names just by my memory.

Bruce is on now! Ha!

"Do You Love Me" - The Contours

On the Dirty Dancing soundtrack, they axed the fadeout/fadein, the bastards. Greatest slight return in rock & soul history ...
