Yays and nays for Folker?

-I don't mind the Strokes.
But
A) they're more fun to see live than to listen to a full LP
cool smiley they're more enjoyable as a singles band
C)they suffered the bad end of a hype problem...that they largely caused
D) they're not as bad as detractors have it yet not as strong as fans claim

Well, with the Westerberg work on Vagrant I really do like all the releases just to varying degrees. There's some great stuff scattered across them. I think the recording alone in his basement schtick is starting to run out of steam but all the work is sincere and interesting and not the wimped out phoniness of his Eventually and Suicane Gratifaction phases which were just brutal. To be honest I thought he was done after those. Pleasantly surprised.

Now with the Strokes......I love them to death, but not because of the hype or that I think they are the second coming of the Heartbreakers. I always found them an interesting mix between the Only Ones lyrically, in the sense that every song is a take on romantic situations and maybe Wire's Pink Flag for arty/contrived minimalism. When you look at them through that lens the Velvets/Television comparison seems even more misguided than it originally did. They are a "Pop" band afterall, and that's meant as a compliment.
