Sideway Look

This Scottish quintet writes solid nouveau pop songs and plays them with a mix of guitars and keyboards (did I mention accordion?). The arrangements haul in everything — from controlled guitar feedback to mellow horns — which makes the album highly varied in sound, but Brian Smith’s posey vocals — a dramatic Bowie/Eric Burdon delivery — occasionally seem out of place. Smoothly capable on everything from mild soul to straightforward guitar-based dance rock, Sideway Look manage to drop hints of everyone from Big Country to Haircut One Hundred.
