  • The Secrets* (Why Fi) 1982

This Midwest American quartet (whose name, for some reason, incorporates an asterisk) made its debut in 1979 with a single released on a Kansas City, Missouri independent label. Three years later, the band’s LP, co-produced by Tom Petty sideman Stan Lynch, leads off with “It’s Your Heart Tonight,” that 45’s A-side. A bit older and more stylish perhaps, the new-lineup Secrets* still play brilliant power pop, with instantly memorable songs, sparkling vocal harmonies and crisp rock’n’roll instrumentation. Ten could-be-hits on one disc.
