A skilled diva with a closetful of unappetizing voices, Deborah Borchers is the raison d’être for this San Francisco quartet, which delivers her theatrical adventures and the pretentious lyrics as an updated variation on new romantic dance-rock. While Borchers’ diversity suggests Danielle Dax or Nina Hagen, what little appeal her strident dramatics hold is drowned out by the band’s overheated guitar arrangements. Ambitious but confused, Love Club possess substantial skills, but no idea how to make a record for anyone but themselves.
