Let's say we qualify 'BEST' group by requiring: -they ARE a group, not a solo or interchangeable musicians under a heading -they have enough longevity to receive the best tag -they have an influence today -they made studio albums that are start to finish capitivating and not just for individual songs alone -they were a real group in that their live tour was/is known for its musiby Paganizer
In rankings of Clash albums GEER sometimes rates lower than Combat Rock for many fans. Your list did reveal a pension for the less repeatedly beaten of an artists's oeuvre while still recognizing the critically greatest artists and your passion for them. I rediscovered GEER due to a rare clarity brought by digital remastering - as a rule I prefer the warmer tone of vinyl but the oroginal LPby Paganizer
(jumping at the chance to join a pointlessly opinionated topic): 5 desert islands- Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti Clash - Sandinista! Husker Du - Zen Arcade MBV - Loveless Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation stable for a decade but for two: Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street Smiths - Meat is Murderby Paganizer
Could this post be a hint as to the inclusion of G.E.E.R. in your top 50?by Paganizer
When I hear the 'alternative' tag I think of the frat bands of the 90's. Maybe the term was co-opted by the 'corporate right'. I always liked the term 'underground' and now prefer 'indie' (which means more than 'independant label' ). There are too many 2000's bands too list, but I stand by my claim of Yo La Tengo as the best 'alternby Paganizer
Assuming you look in the used vinyl section (lots of copies around) have you considered cassette? Harder to find are the first single, first LP and the posthumous Vortex LP (i.e. Ultraprophets had the biggest pressing). For the curious - Christmas mutated into Combustible Edison (a member of the 'lounge' movement of the 90's) after James McNew went into the sonically fertile groundby Paganizer
Ira's list reveals an era with a 70's weight and also is very curious with its 'denouncing' of more popular siblings - aside from Give 'em Enough Rope, Country Life appears instead of Siren, Made to Be Broken instead of Hang Time, Tim over Let it Be, etc. and the only list ever on the planet to prefer their Satanic Majesties! With the advent of THIS media, I can imagine how difficult it would be to finance a print magazine with the content of Trouser Press - though they seem able to do so in UK. Of the many online mags, have u tried pitchforkmedia or buddyhead?by Paganizer
Purchased second edition at music store in late eighties after already encountering magazine in dark alley. Late night rendezvous' in closet led to divorce after choice ultimatums were issued.by Paganizer
Too bad books have been cost prohibitive to publish due to corporate greed, the book forms indeed far surpass the website form in reference value, convenience and usefullness. A complete 90's guide in printed form would be awesome.by Paganizer
From what I can tell, the GRIM4 extended version you have is now the rarest version. What I found was, the US 12" is the same as the single version and the CD is the No Sleep mix making the regular 12" extended version a UK 12" vinyl b-side, unreleased on CD...unless somebody knows more?by Paganizer
What was the song like?by Paganizer
Thanx for the info! I'll have a listen to the vinyl 12" to see what i can tell. You mention the Eild west Express mix - I have a 7" noted as the Wild west End mix - possibly rare, don't know - but, superior to the LP track w/ a superior extended solo)by Paganizer
Maybe it is...i thought the MCA singles extended was the same one but now I'm not sure - the UK "No Sleep" vinyl is marked 'GRIMX4'...is that the unique one u r talking bout?by Paganizer
+/- (plus minus) connected to Versus - one of the best overlooked bands...from NYC?by Paganizer
10 would take time but I always spring to the defence of "Same Old Scene" by Roxy Musicby Paganizer
Anyone have the 'No Sleep Until Wednesday' mix of Eloise?by Paganizer
Opal had their drony moments but they reached a level never attained by Mazzy Star whose slight J&MC connection let them coast towards a few more fans/radio/TV than they would have otherwise had. Conversely, Opal maintained a density/intrigue that makes their full LP worth a listen or 3.by Paganizer
The Damned...not fraudulent, I say. They only toured the US for two months of their 28 year existence with James/Scabies and they continue to offer a great live show for all the fans who never got to see them in 80's/90's. With Sensible on guitar and Patricia on bass, they're worth seeing.by Paganizer
