Yesterday I picked up the 'London Calling 25th Anniversary Legacy' 3x. Unfortunately it's mindless repackaging in the vein of Story V.1, Story V.2, and Singles . The packaging is low-quality digipack with a weak spine (mine shows sign of wear after one use) and the discs are of low quality (the first DVD was defective, the CDs are not the qulaity of previous LC releases). If you look at the obscurity of many of the (great) bands he promoted and the size of many of the labels, if any payola existed it was probably in the amount of a pint or a latte. What a list! The man had taste and a lifelong enthusiasm, for shor. (And what a place to die, Macchu Pichuu?!) Post Edited (10-29-04 13:32)by Paganizer
Inspired by 'M's post (in a different thread): "Toss away 12 songs and you have a damn good two-record album." People have been saying this for 20 years now about the Clash three-by. In fact, fans often make their own 90 minute tape/80 minute CD of their favorite tracks but I've found widely differing opinions on which are the great tracks and which are toss-offs, i.e.,by Paganizer

Ira writes: "In any field of critical endeavor, no student of a field is disqualified from discussing a work until surpassing it." In fact, if you have surpassed an acheivement, it looks awful when you critique a peers work in anything but a positive light - which wouldn't be a full critique. For example, see the LA Laker mess or picture Mark McGuire critiquing a fellow MLB on hisby Paganizer
Anyone hear Gibby's new solo? I'm not expecting the Surfers or anything, being a fan of Leary's inventions...by Paganizer
Remember the band Green Jelly? The guys who were called Green Jello but chickened out from using the copyrighted name and sounded like Gwar Lite for younger brothers not old enough to actually see Gwar? Sorry to bring back the ugly memory. Well, my brother still gets them confused with Green Day. I never liked Green Day that much and couldn't seperate them from the Nirvana-flow while at theby Paganizer
Filler free? I must differ. Curious from the massive hype (magazine covers before popularity, a sold out tour in England where they were yet to even be heard) I found 'Is this it' to be generic fodder. Granted, 'Room on Fire' is yards better but is still half filler. As is apparent from interviews, the band itself was not solely to blame for the massive hype attack (paralleleby Paganizer
My first exposure (as a child) to Syd Barrett came as a rumour that he had taken bad drugs and they had made him so crazy he had to move to France, live in a shack and feed pigs all day. It was a lasting impression as I had just heard Dark Side for the first time and took the rumour at its dark face value - as kids do. Later in life I heard the first two Pink LPs which, to me, were Syd at his besby Paganizer

That's the one I have. I was sorta hoping there was a better introduction. The subject came up after a few years of seeing Emergency & I on so many 'best of' lists, etc. Not only was Travis' outing ravaged on Pitchfork, it's the only review that I found on their site with 0 of 10. I'd like to hear it just to clean the palate and set a standard for scale bottom. (by Paganizer
Music fans have mentioned not cathing the buzz of Stooges, MBV, Radiohead, etc. I don't get the Dismemberment Plan. Sounds like a generic cutout bin 'alternative' corporate act. Someone explain...by Paganizer

It always sounded to me like cheesy disco with the James Brown song being tolerable when at a dance club. But then, it was a dance music project.by Paganizer
Weren't they everybody's favorite band for a week/month/year? I always thought 'The Name of this Band is' was a great LP but apparently the band didn't think so and it is just now getting a CD release (though I've long had a boot) with extra trax. This seems to add fuel to the reunion rumours that popup every few years..but if the Clash were getting reunited and theby Paganizer
Maybe it was a good thing you weren't playind g-rap. But if she was a bag lady, how could she be someone's neighbor... Looks like I had the original 3 LPs, of which I think Strange Times was the most consistently great and Script the least. Yeah, sounds like both, and if it was federal court, then it's probably impending federal time unless he's already there...hope he recovers, he was fully 33% of the talentby Paganizer
They definitely have a different context that they played in and that's crucial to the sound (of any dual guitar band). But Verlaine's stuff is probably what most would walk away remembering. The style is apparent if you listen to the solo stuff from each. What say anyone re their early 90's 'comeback'? I don't have a strong memory of the tour and the LP sounds likeby Paganizer
I think it was a County Jail tour for the parking space incident because it happened on federal (post office) property which makes him a terrorist, doncha know...but he hasn't been well enough to tour OR record with his bro from what I hear...as hard as they used to tour, t's great you got to see them. They used to come as much as 3 times a year from 84-92, sometimes just showing up witby Paganizer
skook - inspired by your richard lloyd comments and the frustration of convincing oneself you've come up with an original riff - Lloyd has some tricky and original stuff. Lately I have a whole new appreciation for Curt Kirkwood who I feel is only matched by, say, Jimmy Pade, Richard Thompson...amazingly to learn and makes you realize the genius inside of it...shame that the Meat Puppets didby Paganizer
