Heh, I have a "soft rock" playlist on my iPod. Some faves: Randy Newman: "God Song" Loudon Wainwright III "Summer's Almost Over" Kings of Convenience "Homesick" Eels "Ugly Love" Deniece Williams "Free" any number of Tom Waits ballads, e.g. "Fish and Bird" from Brian Eno's "Another Day On Earth": "Thisby MrFab
Yeah, I saw 'em live last year, but they're probably too twee for most "cool" rockers.by MrFab
Sting (if he's still considered "alternative"). Apart from his nails-on-chalkboard voice, what was with that weird accent he used to affect - was that supposed to be Jamaican (Ja-fakin') or sumthin? "Yooo don' have to poot on de red laaaaat..." Verlain never bothered me. But Dylan always did. Probly 'cause Verlaine's a better guitarist.by MrFab
Billy Joel "Still Rock'n'Roll To Me" Kris Kristofferson "Blame It On The Stones" (about blaming society's ills on rock groups like the Rolling Stones - hey, he was down with the kids)by MrFab
The Verve getting sued by the Rolling Stones despite the fact that "Bittersweet Symphony" sounded absolutely NOTHING like the "The Last Time" - The Verve remade a part of Andrew Loog Oldham's orchestral remake of "The Last Time" which had nothing to do with the Stone's melody. Oh I loves them Rollers meself, you can't get too bubblegum for me, just thought it was an amusing contrast between their early style and the later headbangin' stuff they became known for. Dave Evans has his own band, he says he's happy (but they all say that, don't they?) Saw posted this on another site: "I used to work at Liverpool Our Price with the original Stone Roby MrFab
I just never heard of Mr. Reid until last week, but, yeah, I did read he had a number of solo albums. I did just hear AC/DC with their original lead singer Dave Evans. Check this vid: AC/DC started off as the Bay City Rollers apparantly.by MrFab
Just read that Nirvana's original drummer Chad Channing is attempting a solo career. Poor guy, ya gotta feel for someone who comes that close to history, only to have it snatched away from them: Angus MacLise - Velvet Underground's orig. drummer, quit when he thought they were selling out (by accepting a paying gig) only to frantically try to rejoin after watching the Velvets hook up wby MrFab
I first heard the term to describe Guided By Voice's mono, tape-hissy sound. Casiotone for the Painfully Alone are a good example - one guy witha Casio, you can hear him turning on and off the tape recorder. I'll take Hi-Fi anyday: Esquivel! flying from channel to channel, Zoom Pow!by MrFab
Had too much to drink at the Red Lobster Now the room's spinning 'round like the blades of a helicopter - Beasties I arrrived in front of the dormitory Yo, could you tell me where is door three? They showed me where it was for the moment I didn't know I was in for such an event - Biz Markieby MrFab
scratchie sez: "For me, it's...the fact that when I hear the song "Bargain", I think about a car ad instead of what the song's really about." EXACTLY. I fuckin HATE that one of my fave sly & family stone songs "Everyday People" is now embedded in my mind as a car commercial. There's some insidiously evil about this - everytime an oldies stationby MrFab
Yeah, he's got Jackson Browne on his records, but don't hold that against him. He rocks alot harder then most of the usual Laurel Canyon suspects, with a deliciously nasty, subversive wit. I quite thoroughly enjoy his "Greatest Hits" album, but I just don't think that anyone who consorted with Linda Ronstandt is ever really gonna be considered "alternative."by MrFab
It actually is possible. So far as the '70s groups were concerned, the college/alt radio network had yet to be set up, and British radio had a only a few stations and the Pistols were banned from them. Rodney's had music biz contacts since long before his radio show, so I do know he's had access to demos, acetates, promo copies etc that he would play long before official releasby MrFab
Theatrical, bombastic, larger-then-life. Androgynous/campy. And deffo not always blues-based, e.g. Roxy Music, Bowie, early Eno, Tubes, Queen, "Rocky Horror". It actually shares some characteristics with (horrors!) prog - over-the-top, flamboyant, complex song structures. But, unlike most prog, it's FUN, not trying to show off, or get all heavy and "artistic." It doeby MrFab
Yup, and "Jugband Blues," the one Syd tune from "Saucerful of Secrets" is aces. "Lucy Leave" is a early ('66) fairly straight-ahead garage-rocker that surfaced in the Nineties. It's really grown on me since some nice person posted it on the inter-webs. "Interstellar Overdrive" live version off "Ummagumma." "The Nile Song" frby MrFab

At my college station the program director didn't comment much, just circled recommended songs. Except for one of the last post-Stan Wall of Voodoo albums, on which he wrote, "This band should seriously consider retiring." The station was Hollywood punk out-of-control crazy. One dj yelled on air fuck the station, fuck the university, turned off the signal, and locked the studio dby MrFab

Brooklyn in the new Manhattan, innit? I predict a rebirth of the once-glorious New York scene there. And as for Ian AstMorrison, I saw The Cult perform "Little Devil" on TV recently, which is, what, a 20 year old song? Might as well go for the oldies act that pays more.by MrFab
Which neighborhood is this? You can sell Homes of the Stars maps on street corners like they do here in Hollywood. Actually here in LA we keep getting more Brits, the latest being Eric Idle (we both frequent the same British pub in the Valley), and (perhaps a nod to his devoted Latino fan base?) Morrisey, although I don't expect to see him around makin the scene much - that might result inby MrFab
"Wreckless Eric...cult classic single “Whole Wide World,” which was featured in the Will Farrell film “Stranger Than Fiction.” That was quite a pleasant shock when Ferrell started playing that tune. Heh, I had an audio tape of that in the '80s. Guess a bootleg had been floating around for a while. Never actually saw the video tho, thanks. Did Patti REALLY like that song? It does warm the heart tho to see a buncha little kids screaming over...Patti Smith. ("Yaaayyy!!!")by MrFab

Don't take it personally Black Box Recorder fans, the seriously understaffed TP needs alot of updating, which is where this message board comes in - any of ya'll heard Nina Hagen's '90s albums?by MrFab
I don't have TP book #1, but I've got the other volumes - no Carroll. Amazing. Agree about the awesomeness of "People Who Died" and "Basketball Diaries" (the book, never saw the flick). He did some excellent spoken-work recordings, too, I believe on John Giorno's compilations.by MrFab
Weird. That's news to me. A little research reveals that Keidis's father was an actor, so perhaps he crossed paths with Sonny during his pre-political cheeseball acting days. I still cannot confirm or disprove the rumour that Eazy E (Eric Wright) was the son of funk legend Charles Wright of Watts 110th St Rhythm Band fame. Apart from the fact that NWA covered Wright's "Expby MrFab
