Just did a fill-in show on my WFMU channel that is festooned - FESTOONED, I tell ya! - with TP bands: The concept was: applying to the "Americana" format what The Cramps did to rockabilly. That is to say, the "psycho-" version of not just rockabilly, but roots music in general. Thing is, I don't know if I've ever actually listened to any Americana shows/statioby MrFab
Never thought we’d hear much from LL, as he seems to be focused on acting. Like fellow thespians as Ice T and The Fresh Prince (as I still call him), figured we wouldn’t hear much from him beyond the occasional movie theme or one-off single. (Ice T’s remake of Suicidal Tendencies’ “Institutionalized” was a hoot.) But hey, I was pleasantly surprised by Ice Cube’s “I Am The West” album from someby MrFab
School starts crazy early now. We actually had to cancel a family vacation because school begins so early in August. They spreeeeaaad out the school year with so many days off, and an unnecessarily lengthy 3-week Christmas break. But anyway. Go, Li’l Heff! Yay college radio!by MrFab
Don’t know this one. I like The Boss Martians, thanks. Another one I have: covering “Sunshine Superman” (?!) and “Why Can’t We Live Together” on an album by veteran funky jazz organist Lonnie Smith.by MrFab
How would YOU like to have legendary singer Iggy Pop perform on YOUR album? Imagine how impressed your friends will be! At a reasonable price, Iggy Pop will sing with YOU. What are you waiting for? Call this number right now. Operators are standing by! I kid, I kid. The man is a legend, he can do what he wants. But breno's post about Joe Jackson had a link to a goofy Iggy/Jackson duet ofby MrFab

An old picture recently surfaced of K Harris' husband Doug Emhoff holding up a copy of "Give 'Em Enough Rope." Sure, it's one of The Clash's weakest albums (not counting "Cut The Crap"), but hey - a possible future First Gentleman apparently liked The Only Band That Matters enough to proudly display one of their albums. He might be a TP 1G.by MrFab

Well, it’s finally happened, y’all. Someone of the TP generation could be hitting the White House: Obviously, his favorite Replacements album would be the one they named after him, “Tim.“ But I would think his favorite Husker Du song would be “new day rising.“ I mean, that’s got ‘campaign theme song’ written all over it.by MrFab
I would be very interested if these new recordings captured the fire that made them live sensations. Rarely has a hyped debut arrived with such a clunk as Lone Justice’s. Thanks for the tip on the Omnivore releases, belfast, I should check those out. And in other LA cow-punk news: -new X album now out! -when the missus and I saw the rip-roaring Mavericks/Dwight Yoakum show last week, Dwby MrFab
A year later: "Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor died from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma, her death certificate reveals, according to an Irish newspaper." Possibly caused by smoking. I'm glad it wasn't drugs or suicide.by MrFab
Oops, we’re all wrong, The Chills are still together. And they now cover “Stairway To Heaven” AND “Groove Is In The Heart”:by MrFab
“a band initially perceived as failures after they got dropped by Slash” Oh dang, I didn’t know that. “Heavenly Pop Hit” stood out like a healthy thumb in a sea of sore grunge, but maybe that’s actually why it wasn't the hit it should have been. Just read the TP article on The Chills, and I’m amazed he lived this long. And worked with Van Dyke Parks? (*scurries off to check that out*)by MrFab
Tom Waits and Crystal Gayle - “One From The Heart” soundtrack; just checked ‘Reviews’ and looks like the TP review of Waits skips this album. As Bip pointed out, Robert Fripp with Daryl Hall, as well as with the Roches. Check out the latest under “Articles”: “When the Cramps Played the Napa Psychiatric Hospital.” Fortunately, this momentous occasion from 1978 was captured on video. Only 20 minutes long or so, but one of the all-time great moments in rock n roll history. The article describes the opening band, The Mutants. I’m not familiar with them. Is there video footage of their performance, too? In any cby MrFab
Actually, I believe Delvin was referring to the lead singer of the opening band, not the Los Lobos singer. Pretty sure Dave Hidalgo doesn't shake his butt at the audience too often. But I bet, if he did, he could make it work.by MrFab
Did ‘60s folk-rock unite the folk and rock fans? I have a feeling that it was a mostly rock phenomenon. Folkies were such pissy purists, and most folk-revival stuff was so corny. So I doubt that, say, Kingston Trio fans made up half of the Byrds audience.by MrFab
Like what Delvin said about two opposing philosophies of hard rock - punk and metal - joining at grunge, New Jack Swing did that with black America’s polar opposites: the slick, commercial romantic divas of RnB and the hard-boiled gangstas of hip-hop. (And, unlike grunge, New Jack Swing was fun!)by MrFab

I was reading this article: and I liked the concept of the musical equivalent of visual artists, but I’m not sure I agree with his examples. Salvador Dali = Zappa? Hmm… I’m sure you all could come up with good examples, but I’m a-feared we would be too literal. Like his example of Futura = Suicide.
