Acc. to Facebook, it's Trouser Press's birthday! Happy Birthday, you wonderful old buildi -- excuse me -- you wonderful old magazine! And Ira, too!by blasmo
It could be worse. You could live in Oklahoma, where the politics has gotten so stupid that people in other countries know who our senators are, and always preface their names with variations on the word "Insane". Welcome to the Oligarchy, my friends. It's always been here, but now it doesn't have to worry about being embarrassed. Post Edited (03-09-11 06:27)by blasmo
Also, I'm not critiquing your taste -- not at all. I love Automatic for the People, and you don't. What I'm disagreeing with is what you seem to be saying in your post -- possibly unintentionally, and it's my faulty understanding of it -- which is that Loverboy, Foreigner, and REM are the equivalent of Weezer and Matchbox 20 to people; bands that were considered hot at one timby blasmo
"I mean, the college kids today speak of them the way we speak of Foreigner and Loverboy." Who is this "we" you're speaking of? Also, to use the words of Gene Siskel when someone said The Valachi Papers was better than The Godfather, "You're wrong." Certainly, REM isn't as good as band as The Beatles. Nor The Rolling Stones, pre-Goats Head Soup. Hoby blasmo

I suggest trying the new Smithereens, too. Nice and bashy -- sounds like the old stuff.by blasmo
My early nineties nostalgia is a little different. I listened to a lot of R&B, hip-hop and rap back then, primarily because the place I worked at -- work at still -- was mainly staffed by African-Americans, and they listened to the local soul station. While a lot of it was very disposable -- how many bands did LA and Babyface produce anyway? They all sound alike to me -- I made some great disby blasmo
Agreed. I was telling my boss about how my friends and I used to camp out for REM new releases and then get together to try and figure out what the hell Stipe was saying. It was like D&D for the rock critic set. That sort of fandom ended instantly, unfortunately, with Monster and then New Adventures. I've never given up on a band as fast as I did REM. I've listened to every REM albuby blasmo
Not bad at all. Will be glad to pick it up later on. And "Mine Smell Like Honey" is probably the most REM-ish song on it -- very nice. A little bland, personality-wise, but sounds like they're having a lot of fun, just like Accelerate.by blasmo
Very enjoyable to read. Thanks for the list.by blasmo
I disagree on The Social Network being Oscar-bait, when The King's Speech was so much more obviously so. I thought Reznor's soundtrack was fundamental to the emotional content of the film -- I'll just go ahead and admit I think Social Network is one of the best films I've ever seen, and about as accurate a depiction of America as Cold Turkey, which I watched instead of the Oscby blasmo

I agree that this season isn't quite as good, but that's like saying The Magnificent Ambersons isn't as good as Citizen Kane. Or Reckoning's not as good as Murmur.by blasmo

Sweet. I hopped on here to post it myself. I love the McCartney/Clapton duet on "Something" the most (even though Clapton screws up the words), but this is a really good concert. One of the best tribute concerts ever.by blasmo
No kidding. What a find!by blasmo
I listen to the theme from Community at least once a day. God, I love that song. I've been meaning to check on their other stuff, but just haven't gotten around to it yet.by blasmo
I'm listening to the "Roller's Show" single right now because of this thread.by blasmo

The entirety of "Russians" causes involuntary eye-rolling, and nausea. From "Jesus Take The Wheel": "So from now on, tonight". And not afterwards? I mean, I know the song is written just for the hook they created, but c'mon. This one's right up there with "Fireflies", for me.by blasmo
I was given TMBG's first album by my brother, who didn't like it and thought I would. Boy, he was right. I saw Treat Her Right early on before I'd heard of them, and by the end of the evening owned everything at the t-shirt booth.by blasmo
When Spin included Black Sabbath in their Alternative Record Guide, I knew the times were changing. (although why they were in there, but neither Sparks or Mott the Hoople were, I don't know. Hell, the first band in the book is ABBA)by blasmo
Cheap Trick -- Standing on the Edge. Finally found it domestically on CD. Great hooks, singing and playing, but some clunkers in the lyric department. Still damned enjoyable. "How About You" has a hook to die for.by blasmo
self-censorship -- Peace Train by 10,000 Maniacs. They took it off In My Tribe because of the former Stevens' support of the Rushdie fatwa.by blasmo

Can't bring myself to care about the NFL anymore. Hell, even Puppy Bowl has sold out. I'll stick with the Doctor Who marathon. GB 35 Pit 14.by blasmo
I know a lot of people who love the band and who will be very upset by this. Could be a good time to revisit them both -- the group and the fans.by blasmo
