Wow. That was surprisingly enjoyable. It sounds a lot like that Wings soundalike in Role Models, and just about as good.by blasmo
Completely missed this. An amazing writer and thinker. Damn.by blasmo

It seems to be a version of 11/4, but the duple feel seems like it's alternating 12/8 and 10/8. I think their final album was their best. The songs just seemed their strongest, and the music was phenomenal. "Demon Days", from Forster's last solo album, is an amazing song that McLennan started and Forster finished. I love almost everything they did, even some of the earlier, hby blasmo
Sparks performed their entire catalog, one album per night, with encores made up of other songs. That would have been a fascinating run to watch.by blasmo
Every once in a while, one of these threads makes me very happy to read and this is one of them. I liked the new Cars CD (not the New Cars CD) although I wished it had a few more hooks to latch onto. And Delvin's last post made me roll my eyes.by blasmo
Should we go ahead and start the "fell the farthest" thread? Or did we do that one already? I've heard "Senses Working Overtime" and "Forever Young" as Muzak this week. The latter was made even funnier by Tom Haverford's decision to sing it while he's on hold with the company he wants to return his almond/seaweed eye care products to on Parks and Rec.by blasmo
Agreed, but Westerberg's later stuff is much better. His first three decline in quality exponentially as they go. Chris Mars' first and second solo albums are a lot of fun. Bash and Pop has held up really well. It's my fave, too, out of the group. I thought Dunlap's record was just sloppily good enough to work, but I never rebought it after losing it, so I can barely rememberby blasmo
"Popular Creeps" is a great, lost classic.by blasmo
I really like the new one. Nice melodies and a return to some of her old lyrical concerns. Good stuff.by blasmo
That's a fantastic two sentence obituary for the man, sir.by blasmo
Well, damn. Her new solo album is a freaking blast. An amazing musician who should be so much more known than many of her peers.by blasmo
From the "movie" I watched this morning -- The Legend of the Golden Gun -- "Moonbeam" -- an ode sung to his horse that is really pushing boundaries. "Cold Ethel", of course.by blasmo

I think the new album's pretty good -- easily their most consistent since Green Thoughts. I'm not as big a fan of 11 as most people.by blasmo

It was that weird, inter-statial gap between hair metal saturation -- so anything "different" had a shot at airplay -- and Nirvana -- eventually leading to the end of that gap, with the rise of noisier radio stuff. Almost all of that sounds like weird step-children on 70's rock, so that was its shot. I also blame the rise of Vh1 as an alternative to MTV, which was showing fewer andby blasmo
Oh, I saw that tour in OKC. Besides the horror of Blind Melon -- I really had no idea why they were there -- there was the experience of seeing Live for the first time. I turned to my brother and said, "If these guys ever find a way to stop being so serious, they'll make it big." Little did I know. I thought PiL, even though it was touring behind the That What Is Not album, was actby blasmo

...I apparently watched a Pink Floyd documentary on VH1 Classic, uttered something about Syd Barrett being a genius, hopped on iTunes, and purchased the deluxe Piper at the Gates of Dawn reissue, featuring both the mono and stereo versions, a couple of B-sides and a few outtakes. I have no memory of doing this. I also have no memory of the bicycle repair clinic that went on in the front room, eby blasmo
Part of the joy of The Shaggs is that the entire thing sounds like they mastered it so that every voice and instrument is at the exact same level. The background "vocals" especially. It sounds like clumsy robots trying to create rock music.by blasmo
I still think it's pretty good, but the production is a bit dense and doesn't allow some of the details to poke through. I love "Mine Smell..." even with its horrible title. You're right, though, Stipe has certainly lost much of his muse. Too much repetition of older lyrical ideas, which is a shame, since Buck and Mills blast through this nicely. If they can get Stipe bacby blasmo
I used to play The Shaggs as part of the evaluation argument exercise in my comp classes. It always brought on the "is this just a joke?" response. If they didn't have the Alternative Take of "Who Are Parents", then I'd never have believed that what they were doing was intentional, but it obviously was. I enjoy it, but I don't play it often, and never just 1-2 sby blasmo
Given how rarely The Residents tour, I'd make sure to hit that. Devo live is almost always fantastic, though.by blasmo
