She developed a deeper version of her singing voice to help it last longer, and it grates me. Weird to think how big she was in the 80's, both solo-wise and with the Mac. Remember all the choreography in her videos? Esp. "I Can't Wait". Buckingham is fantastic, at times. Tusk is one of the best art-rock albums ever to be made by a multi-platinum band. Not always listenable,by blasmo
Thanks, everyone. Sounds like I've got a pretty good journey ahead, since you've helped me avoid some of the rocks in the river. Which I guess is a bit ironic, given that they're a rock band. How strange that an entire chunk of The Beach Boys' music is "lost"; they never play it on the radio, and it's rarely discussed, since the focus is all on Brian Wilson nowby blasmo
Yeah, caution's pretty advised. I think the connect through Marilyn Chambers to JG Ballard goes through David Cronenberg: Chambers to Rabid to Cronenberg to Crash. Empire of the Sun might've come out quite differently though, if she was in it.by blasmo
I've been listening to this all day since I rediscovered it driving through Dallas Fri. night. I have skimmed some post-Pet Sounds Beach Boys music, but understand that -- aside from Wild Honey -- it's pretty hit and miss. Can anyone give me some advice on this era? iTunes has everything, and I got a nice gift certificate for Santa's B-Day. Many thanks.by blasmo
Much obliged. I also still have my really-expensive-at-the-time XTC import CD's.by blasmo
Dude. Have you seen Still Insatiable? She'd aged, but not that badly... Ballard's ideas on "The Body" are extremely influential. I'd love to go into more detail (ownership vs. society), but I'm too busy celebrating Santa's Birthday.by blasmo
Happy Santa's Birthday, you mean. That's how we celebrate it.by blasmo
Nice to see The Call get a mention. They got robbed here in Oklahoma for state rock song.by blasmo
It took me years to get my wife to stop thinking that Peter Himmelman did that.by blasmo
A great band. I hope the reunion tour gets somewhere close to the Midwest. Their live album is one of the best.by blasmo
Yeah, but I got to give a shout out to TP in the comments section of the Onion's AV Club Section. It's under the "Out of Blender, Rolling Stone, and Spin" run of comments and I use this screen name.by blasmo
Dan Seals. England Dan himself.by blasmo
One other thing. The new Superdrag album is very nice.by blasmo
Ditto on Ron Flynt being a hell of a guy. I, too, was prepared to wax nostalgic about 20/20, too. Anyone see the Onion AV Club's Introduction to Power Pop? They recommended The Shoes as an entryway.by blasmo
Trying to get tickets to the London shows. Easy enough, but the flight, etc., is where they get you.by blasmo
Spot on about Respect. In between those two songs are some of his best -- a song cycle about death that is alternately beautiful, brooding, and insightful. Any of XTC's double albums would seem to fit this bill. English Settlement goes off the rails after "No Thugs", and turns into Andy's paragraphs set to music. Oranges and Lemons goes from happy, fun pop to pretentious,by blasmo
Screw it, and listen to Peter Case all day.by blasmo

Saw them open up for R.E.M. on the Green tour at the then-Myriad in OKC. R.E.M. was bored to death -- worst time I've ever seen them. But seeing Pylon perform before about 15000 people made my heart glad. I love seeing bands like this get that sort of exposure. They blew R.E.M. off the stage that night.by blasmo

Holy blanking blank. Damn me for not going to out to LA this weekend for the Doctor Who convention. And I just geeked myself into a black hole...by blasmo

This is amazing. It gets more and more surreal as you start to recognize people being in different bands. Laughed for about five minutes.by blasmo
STEVE, I'm collecting your posts as "found poetry", sir. I rarely get on here on Fridays because I'm too busy with the Doctor Who marathon and ... g-damn, I'm a geek. Much love, sir.by blasmo
Balancing Rush's technical awesomeness with Peart's philosophy was difficult until the Aqua Teen Hunger Force Movie, where he and his mobile drum kit save everyone. And while I hate to say it, yes, Ditko's versions of Rand's "philosophy" are spot on. One thing to ponder: Why aren't there any kids in Rand's books? None of her protagonists have families, beby blasmo
Destroy your safe and happy lives/ Before it is too late -- Memphis, Egypt by The Mekons My vote for greatest opening line ever -- song or album. I think Mekons Rock and Roll is the greatest rock album of all time, though, so I'm a bit biased. Ira, thanks for accepting the punk rock singles on Facebook. I go by David M there.by blasmo
Lost and Found? Amazing record. As part of the Jason and the Scorchers Essentials, Vol. 1, with Fervor, it makes one of the greatest CD's of all time. Oh. Sorry for the hijack. I'm still waiting for my friend Trace to give me back my copy of Sandinista. It's been years.by blasmo
