Tommy Stinson put out a call earlier this year - wish I shared that, but now Steve Wynn's doing it so here it is: "Tina here. Anybody else thinking about Thanksgiving? Looking for hosts for house concerts for Steve in this area in late November, early December. Does your living room/den/rec room/spare bedroom/basement hookah lounge have room for 45 or more people? I may be a bigger R.E.M. fan than most here. I grew to like all of their records with Bill Berry quite a bit. Most of the I.R.S. ones and Automatic for the People I loved immediately, but the rest took time because I thought they were too uneven. I've since come to appreciate the "lesser" moments, and even Monster (arguably famous for being the most common find in the dollar bins)by belfast
LOL I Have No Clue What This Song Was #1 was apparently a Lee Dorsey cover, "The Greatest Love." (EC loves Dorsey. IIRC the album he did with Allen Toussaint has quite a few of the songs Dorsey made famous.) I Have No Clue What This Song Was #2 is "A Face in the Crowd," the title song to that musical he wrote that has yet to be produced (based on the famous and sadly wayby belfast
I think Greil Marcus was probably their biggest champion in the U.S. and maybe the first major critic to cover them because Rolling Stone sent him to the UK to write about the scene, right when Gang of Four was coming up, and he was immediately blown away by them. Robert Christgau was also an early champion, but I think his write-ups were limited to reviewing the records as they came out. Anywby belfast
Jonathan Richman has a new album, and besides longtime drummer Tommy Larkins, Jerry Harrison (!) joins him for half the album. Here's the title track, and now I'm dreaming of a collaboration that features those three and bassist Ernie Brooks (who regularly plays gigs around NYC). Wouldn't be expecting the Modern Lovers of yore, and drummer David Robinson is retired anyway.by belfast
I have a homemade compilation of '70s pop tracks just to have a neat, chronological survey of music that I actually enjoy but otherwise wouldn't have on disc simply because they're all popular acts that I normally don't listen to. Free and Bad Company are both on that compilation, represented by "All Right Now" and "Can't Get Enough" where Ralphs catchby belfast
Just passed away unexpectedly from a stroke. Never been a fan of the more lucrative band that he co-founded afterwards, but love Mott to bits ever since I heard "All the Way to Memphis" kick start Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore and Ralphs is gloriously all over that track.by belfast
On a slight tangent, how’s the compact Steve Wynn box set Decade? A friend of mine caught a great deal on Black Friday and it was so ridiculous cheap he got me a copy as well. I think half or most of it is actually non-album or previously unreleased bonuses. A lot of music, but I’ve yet to open it.by belfast
I think this is a common trait with a lot of older adults who aren't exactly music connoisseurs despite claiming to be. It's like that Simpsons episode where Homer is shocked at his children's tastes when it's clear he's not only out of touch but willfully narrow-minded, clinging on to a view of rock n' roll limited to not just his youth but to the thoroughly mediocrby belfast
Nice! The Nuggets set sounds like the show he put on at City Winery, which was a lot of fun. I took a friend to the second show (setlist was mostly identical but there were a few surprises) and he actually wasn't into it, or really any bunch-of-acts-come-on-and-do-one-song concerts for that matter, but for me it was a crazy fun way to see a lot of people I listen to and never, ever saw in coby belfast
Sting actually gave a nice little tribute to Wilson. (From the sound of it, he may have been the one to break the news to some of his audience members.)by belfast
I had to check the date, but that book came out in 2005 and as someone was definitely a young person then, that's not my experience at all - Brian Wilson was a god among my true music-loving peers. That set him apart from "The Beach Boys" touring with Mike Love - it was actually cool to go see Brian Wilson and his new band, he had the same cred as any of the indie rock bands the unby belfast
They put out much more, but their legacy really rests on a handful of records, roughly the equivalent of the Velvet Underground's modest (studio) discography, but the impact was possibly equally substantial, particularly on hip-hop and R&B - Questlove himself has made that argument many times, a big reason why he wanted to make that documentary (which is good). FWIW, I remember the fiby belfast
Someone who's more knowledgeable can answer in better detail, but that album had a ridiculous recording history where they went through several producers, resulting in multiple versions of many songs (not to mention songs that were never used for a proper album). I think most of their debut may have been produced by Lillywhite, but in the case of that song, they went back to the recording Anby belfast
It's amazing to hear him on "Fools' Gold" on Graham Parker & The Rumour's Heat Treatment, where he comes off like Roy Bittan, and then a year and a half later on Nick Lowe's "I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass" on Jesus of Cool where he comes off like Steve Nieve. It never sank in that it was the same person until now. (And he's also singing harmonby belfast
Bob Andrews passed away yesterday. (Graham Parker also announced his passing on social media.) Here's an appreciation from someone Andrews befriended in Taos as both of them were in a support group for cancer patients: Also, not mentioned in the obit, but I had no idea he produced "There She Goes" for the La's.by belfast
Jeffreys's wife convinced him to let her make a documentary on him, and it's premiering this week at IFC in NYC. Sadly, Jeffreys was also fighting dementia as she was making it, and while he was able to do extensive interviews early on, it's now progressed into the late stages and he's no longer making public appearances. Regardless, for anyone interested, IFC has some greaby belfast
It's a music video, the first one made for "Psycho Killer," directed by Mike Mills (the filmmaker, not the R.E.M. bassist) starring Saoirse Ronan. So anticlimactic, but to be fair Mills is a fine filmmaker. 20th Century Women and C'mon C'mon are excellent. And Ronan is one of the best film stars in mainstream cinema today.by belfast
An acquaintance of mine, perhaps one of the two biggest Who fans I know, is also a big Faces fan and played me some vintage footage of the Faces to explain why Jones would've been seen as a good fit, musically-speaking. (I know he was also a sentimental favorite because they all had similar roots, going back to when they were growing up.) It was convincing and closer to Moon's style ofby belfast
Finally got a chance to hear this. Thanks for posting that Ira! I'm actually not that familiar with Townshend's formative years, so it was fascinating and all new to me. I have a feeling those screenings were poorly publicized. Hours before showtime, neither was anywhere close to selling out with one screening looking like it sold maybe ten tickets. Film Stage even had a ticket giveaway where you just had to respond with your favorite noir movies, and NOBODY responded to it. FWIW, Last R&R Tour was just reissued by Iconoclassics, and not only is it the first time it's been released on vinyl, it's apparently a big upgrade. There's a bonus performance of "The Girl At The End Of The Pier," and per the label's owner, it does a better job of capturing the original show: "A lot of stage patter / storytelling was removed to fit it on Cby belfast
Reportedly it's all for his family. Honestly, I don't think they're getting rich from this. Been playing Captain Beefheart a lot this weekend, partly because of Pavement and partly because of Pere Ubu. The former has a movie that just opened and the members who have been helping with promotion name-checked Beefheart as a massive influence, and in some of the eulogies for David Thomas, Beefheart is brought up as a major early influence. He really is one of those artists who didn't iby belfast

Picked up the double DVD and double CD set Live At Rockpalast 1978 & 1980 (which can be found for less than $20 at some retailers), and it's pretty great. I've only played the DVD's, my main reason for getting it, and Parker is a lot of fun to watch. He's so animated, and even though he's a very intense singer, he's clearly enjoying himself in the 1980 show. (Theby belfast
Percy Sledge (not Faith)? I agree, Chubby Checker is nowhere near the same level of his contemporaries and should not be in the Hall of Fame. If it's because of that one record, then induct the record because there's a category to honor great (or if not great, important) records like "The Twist" though frankly it's a mediocre record and IMHO Hall of Fame inductee Hankby belfast
