There is a lot outpourring of grief over here in the UK following John Peel's passing. Lots of Peel sessions on the radio, which nice, and Mark E Smith on Newsnight, which was not. The most moving piece I have encountered is this lengthy tribute, posted by Bill Nelson on his website: JOHN PEEL: A TRIBUTE FROM BILL NELSON:- John Peel, a British broadcasting legend, a personal mentor andby LMG
Does anyone have any memories of this wonderful band, or know what happened to any of the members? I saw Jacqui Ham's band Dial a few times before they moved from London to the US - they were great. A poster on the Mojo message board is trying to put together a fan website on them, so any information would be gratefully accepted and acknowledged.by LMG
Great, great end of tour performance. Rick Nielsen pointed out and thanked a few 'famous' audience members, but frankly they were from much lesser bands and were hopefully taking notes. Audience aged 10-60+? and over a third female - unique. Todd Rundgren got a very funny shout out which might be libelous - I did not get it but my friend The Slider understood and said it referred toby LMG
I am going to see them tomorrow night at the Shepherd's Bush Empire, and am v excited indeed. One of many bands TP turned me on to in the 70's, they are probably the one American band I most associate with the magazine. Quite a few covers! This site will tell you about their chequered studio career, but I must say that every London show I have ever seen has been an event of some magniby LMG
Hmmm... yet again Ira sends me back to Ian McCulloch's first solo album, produced in 1989 by Gentle Giant's Ray Shulman. I bought it not long after it was released in a Soho record stall for two pounds. Good enough, and Ira's enthusiasm keeps it on my upstairs shelves instead of down in the basement. But better than 'Ocean Rain'? Or 'Crocodiles' or even (in itby LMG
Personally I feel that the free ones tend to devalue the concept of tribute albums because there are so many. There were three Velvet Underground tributes, were there not? Heaven and Hell vol 1-3, with Nirvana, Bill Nelson, James, New Fast Automatic Daffodils, The Wedding Present, Screaming Trees, etc. The Neil Young one 'The Bridge' was very good. The Pixies did a version of 'Winby LMG
'Being Boiled' was the first Human League single, backed with 'Circus of Death'. It was released on the independent Fast label, but both tracks were later re-recorded on the band's first two albums. With the success of 'Dare', the original single was re-released and charted. Many people prefer it to the later versions. All you need to do to sort yourself isby LMG
He's a nice guy, very talented - last seen replacing Rocky Horror Show creator Richard O'Brien on the telly programme The Crystal Maze. Incidentally, the trilogy of albums at the end of their career have a lot of fans over here in the UK among people who would not consider listening to the three pop EMI albums. 'Spirit of Eden' gets roundly dismissed in the TPRG, but they developed the sound in 1991's 'Laughing Stock' and on a 1998 release with many of the same musicians, released as 'Marc Hollis&by LMG
I don't have the vinyl 12" GRIMX 4 - I have the picture sleeve GRIM 4, which is an extended version but is not the version on the MC/VSOP CD. I understand that the "No Sleep" remix was in a different sleeve and was restricted to 2000 copies - I have never seen one. I was suggesting that the CD compilation of the MCA years has the rarest version of 'Eloise', since aby LMG
The version on the Castle VSOP CD - "The MCA Singles A's + B's" - is that the "Wednesday" mix or just an extended 12" mix? It is certainly different to any other mix I have heard, including the one on the 12" UK single. It is 7' 45" long and ends with a brief piano singalong that has no relation to the song and ends in 'whoooo!'.by LMG
Amazon in the UK lists it as available on Koch CD379192, but not currently in stock. Copes are available through two dealers, one in Miami and one in Spain. Is she any good? The only thing I know about her is that she signed to Virgin in 1984 and they put her in the studio with Andy Partridge in November of that year. The two did not get on at all, so she left and he called in the rest of XTC,by LMG
... before I get too old to rock and roll. I am going to see the Who this week, and I saw Jethro Tull a few weeks ago, both at smaller venues (2-3 thousand). Any views on whether these bands should still be performing nearly four decades after their debuts? Are the Damned being fraudulent performing without Brian James and Rat Scabies? Should the Stranglers throw in the towel or carry on withby LMG
