Oh dear. That's a bad look. Michael, you think you're that guy? I've been focused on being the Post-Punk Monk since about 1990 when I got off the current music bandwagon and pretty much kept my eyes on the rear view mirror of music ever since. But at least with the blog I'm actually hearing more new artists than ever in ages.by Post-Punk Monk
The best gig I saw this year was The Nits 50th Anniversary show in Amsterdam. After nearly 40 years of fandom we finally did it and went over for a gig. Which was magical. They played their new "Tree House Fire" EP in full up front and the live performance was spectacular. Warm and glowing. With elegant staging. Then there was Men Without Hats at the Totally Tubular festival. A halfby Post-Punk Monk
Yep! Time to bust out the laserdisc of "Tapeheads." My wife bought a Sam + Dave hits disc that was '89 re-recordings but that's better than nothing. We should have a Stax era comp though for the real deal.by Post-Punk Monk
Oh, that's terrible news! I do love The Suburbs! One of America's finest for my ears. Chaney was a singular vocal presence! One of my bitter regrets was that when I saw Mott The Hoople in Cleveland in 2019, I missed seeing The Suburbs open for the show as they were only doing the Milwaukee-Chicago leg of the tour. Though I see that Chaney had not been with the band following their 2013by Post-Punk Monk
Since I'm the Post-Punk Monk, most of what I buy/hear is 40-50 years old, but with the blog's reach expanding, my rear-view-mirror listening habits are being successfully challenged by promo coming across the transom. To the extent that last year I heard 18 albums released last year. A record, I think! I do not stream. A lot of these artists are in the Bandcamp universe, which for myby Post-Punk Monk
It's been in my want list for some years now. Sadly, I never bit when it was in every cutout bin! The Suburban Lawns cut is a different recording of "Unable" and since then I've come to appreciate the Alley Cats and Bates Motel.by Post-Punk Monk
Funny you should mention "You're So Vain." I've heard it thousands of times from childhood when I was sucking down that AM Top 40 like an addict. It was one of the biggest hits of its year and I've heard it reliably over the decades in the public music sphere. But at a certain point within the last decade I started actively listening to it and I've come to the concluby Post-Punk Monk
That's the kind of praise the tome obviously deserves! I have given it as a gift this year but still need a personal copy…even thought my TP collection #61-84 is always at my side.by Post-Punk Monk
I believe that Jello was their roadie?by Post-Punk Monk
Dammit! I loved The Nails and now I know what I'm writing on Monday's blog! I was thrilled to have a blog comment from Campbell a few years ago when I was gushing over "Mood Swing." Sigh. It's that obituary time of year again. I was just looking at the last obit I ran on PPM and wondering when the next one would come.by Post-Punk Monk
Yow! We saw Nik Baertsch's Ronin at the Big Ears Festival in 2019 and they blew the top of our heads clean off! When Richard Thompson ended at 3:30 that day, we had two options. I was still potentially interested in seeing some Bill Frisell music that I might like, and he was playing with Harmony at The Mill + Mine at 4:00, all the way across town. Or we could walk over to the Tennessee Theaby Post-Punk Monk
If I could only listen to music sold on Bandcamp, I'd be a happy camper. Maybe even more happy than I already am!by Post-Punk Monk
I only saw The Fixx once…on the completely insufferable "Synchronicity Tour" with The Police. And he was so insufferable, I never bothered with The Fixx again.by Post-Punk Monk
Have seen 2.75 Kraftwerk concerts out of 4 in the last 27 years. It all depends on what's on the plate this time. Charlotte is only two hours away.by Post-Punk Monk
I never liked The Pixies either. When I found out the singer called himself "Black Francis" that was just the limit.by Post-Punk Monk
As a perennial Howard Jones naysayer from waaaaay back, let me give two thumbs up to HoJo's current touring band and creative decisions. I thoroughly enjoyed his recent tour with Haircut 100 and ABC ★★★ as he transformed the material I never really liked in a way to integrate it in a band now sporting the mighty Nick Beggs on Chapman Stick/basses. I saw the tour in Cleveland, but if they werby Post-Punk Monk
Never in all my borned days did I ever think I'd ever see the name Midge Ure mentioned in the same breath as Charlie Musselwhite or Elvin Bishop! Check's in the mail, Delvin!by Post-Punk Monk
This is terrible news. Michael is a real mensch, and the loss will be tremendous. I can't even begin to imagine the cosmic gut-punch he's reeling from right now.by Post-Punk Monk
The Veldt! I saw them opening for Cocteau Twins on the "Four Calendar Café" tour in Tampa. And I'm seeing them again next Thursday opening up for The Chameleons in Greenville, SC!by Post-Punk Monk
Fascinating captain. I think the silver, gold, and platinum records will sell for more than the £100-200 estimates. The instruments are probably more in line with reality. If I could get Chris' Casio VL-1 for under $80 I'd be tempted! I used to have the 1977 in-store promo shaped like a parallelogram you can see behind the guy talking but I sold mine last year to fund this year's bby Post-Punk Monk
No one should get shot. Especially when they are walking their dog! Get well, Jake!by Post-Punk Monk
It's heartening to have members of the Monastic WrokSteady Cru™ from all over offering their concerns, because it was a walloper that hit Western North Carolina and I didn't have phone or internet from 9-27-24. But we were very lucky in what was a catastrophic event in many areas. The famed 1916 flood highwater marks were surpassed handily. None of us on our mountain road expected powerby Post-Punk Monk
Herbie was canny enough to double his bass line for "Walk On The Wild Side" so he got a double payment. Good thing too! He made the song…apart from the BVs. And Ronnie Scott's sax. And Lou's indefatigable cool.by Post-Punk Monk
I saw the show in CLE last week and H100 were way better than the handful of singles I'd heard. Apparently Blair Cunningham was having health issues that precluded his participation, so there were only three of five original members onstage. They played like their lives depended on it and were an excellent 30 minutes. Always leave 'em wanting more? ABC ★ ★ ★ played an hour and hadby Post-Punk Monk
The one time I saw Killing Joke in concert was in a club in 1989 when they had a freaking lit brazier onstage with them! Besides the eardrum damage from that night, I look back on that and get a chill in my blood.by Post-Punk Monk
I can't imagine a bad version of "Once Bitten, Twice Shy!" I certainly liked hearing Great White's version, even if their usual material wasn't my style. But conversely, I don't ever want to hear Barry Manilow's version of "Ships." I suspect that would give me hives! The only Manilow I want to hear is his fine duet with Kid Creole.by Post-Punk Monk
One of the stash of 45s I was given as a child to play on a record player that only played 7" 45! Yes it used tubes.by Post-Punk Monk
No. I think it was a smart move to play their biggest hit immediately out of the gate. Defying expectation. Then to play the 12" at the end was a coup de grace. The audience energy was up for their entire set because of that.by Post-Punk Monk
My blog has been getting a lot of hits this week on the Totally Tubular 80s Tour. I see it next weekend, so I thought I'd go to the website and see if there was anything new that maybe I didn't know about. Looks like The Romantics are out, but the promoters have added two more bands to the lineup. The Tubes and …Wang Chung. I was sort of looking forward to The Romantics but The Tubes arby Post-Punk Monk
I loved ZuZu's Petals. Saw them open for Velocity Girl and liked them even more. Bought their "Star Baby" 7" and t-shirt - wore that thing until it was rags. Sad to hear she went so early.by Post-Punk Monk
