A superb composer. Mission: Impossible is amazing, of course, as are his scores for Bullitt, The President's Analyst, Dirty Harry, and (for television) Mannix. He will be very much missed. R.I.P.by Middle C
Japan - "Gentlemen Take Polaroids." This is also my favorite album title/album cover. Runner Up: Gary Numan - "We Take Mystery to Bed"by Middle C

I've seen only a handful of Miyazaki's movies, but every one of them impressed me enormously. The Wind Rises (2013) is my favorite of them. It's one of the great films of this dreary century.by Middle C
Sad news. RIP to a great grouchy artist.by Middle C
Well said, Belfast! It’s indeed ironic that the band’s drummer has been busted for sex crimes, but I confess that I don’t find the name of the New Pornographers “despicable.” (Mr. Seiders’ actions, on the other hand, are, and I’m thankful that he was arrested.) “Despicable” suggests to me that the name should be hidden in a plain brown wrapper. I don’t know the group’s music, and at this stagby Middle C
This is dreadful, dreadful news. Mr. Burke was one of the all-time great drummers. R.I.P.by Middle C

A marvelous artist who will be much missed. The first Lynch film I saw was The Elephant Man, which I caught at a shopping mall cinema in 1980. When I came out of the theatre, my mother (who had been shopping) asked me how the movie was. I was so profoundly moved by the picture that I couldn't speak for at least ten minutes--I was fifteen at the time--for fear of bursting into tears. I reby Middle C

Mr. Wenner also told the New York Times last week that Rolling Stone’s infamous University of Virginia rape hoax article in 2014 was “bulletproof”—“other,” he states, “than this one key fact that the rape described actually was a fabrication of this woman.” He's really on a roll!by Middle C
"Ira on the Fixx," incidentally, reminds me of Jook Savages on the Brazos. It sounds like a lost Paisley Underground album.by Middle C
I still love "Red Skies," "Stand Or Fall," and "Saved by Zero," but "One Thing Leads to Another" has always annoyed me, perhaps because it was so overplayed. But then so was "Every Breath You Take," and I still like that song, too.by Middle C
Buffett composed the excellent score for one of my favorite films, Frank Perry’s Rancho Deluxe. (The screenplay is by the great novelist Thomas McGuane—are there any Captain Berserko fans on this forum?) He also appears in the movie. I love “Margaritaville," and have always fantasized that Bryan Ferry would one day put an Under the Volcano-type spin on this classic song.by Middle C
The title of Bill Nelson's album Getting the Holy Ghost Across was taken from a line in Anthony Burgess's great novel Earthly Powers. The title of another Nelson album, The Love That Whirls, was taken from a long-lost Kenneth Anger short film. (The company which was going to process the movie considered it obscene, and actually destroyed the footage.)by Middle C
The great, great, great Tony Bennett has died. RIP.by Middle C
Bless you for bringing up this topic, Bip! I think our great friend steevee Is correct that the labels want us to buy the same thing over and over again. Although I admire Steven Wilson, I have zero interest in his remixes of classic albums by King Crimson, Yes, Roxy Music, Ultravox, etc. I saw a copy of Wilson’s revision of Rage in Eden at a record shop when Mrs. C and I were vacationing inby Middle C
I absolutely love The Crossing. That disc and Eno's Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks are my two favorite albums from 1983.by Middle C
Murmur is such a fantastic album. For some reason, I never bought the Violent Femmes disc, though I always respected them. I do own the 1993 Add It Up compilation. 1983 also marks the fortieth anniversary of The Trouser Press Guide to New Wave Records. I distinctly remember buying the trade paperback edition at a now-long-gone local bookstore. I was so excited to have a copy in my hands; iby Middle C
