Ah, come on Erik, I'm thinking of the classic Blotto lineup from the '80s, since one of them did pass away some time ago. Also, Vivian Stanshall won't be coming down for breakfast & I don't know if Ray 'n Dave are getting back together again.

Well, Cheese died in the late '90s, but they recently replaced him with Steven Clyde, who was actually in the Star Spangled Washboard Band, the '70s jug band/comedy/performance art group that was the genesis of Blotto. So they're pretty close to a classic lineup now. Plus, Steve and Cheese were both in the Neanderthals together in the '90s--that band was/is led by Los Straitjackets' Eddie Angel. AND Eddie Angel was a backup musician for the Washboard band in the early '70s, barely out of his teens. Plus, Sarge, Bowtie and Steve are currently in a Dave Van Ronk-style jug band together. (Good God, this is a small town.) Frankly, I'm more of a Neanderthals fan. But Blotto will always be a sentimental fave. Plus, we've got John Tichy, an RPI professor, of the original Commander Cody in town here, who frequently guests with Eddie Angel. (Not to mention the fact that one of my favorite rock scribes of the late '60s/early '70s, Langdon Winner, is also an esteemed professor at RPI.)

Erik, I was wondering if you have any inside dope on Blanche Blotto & Chevrolet Blotto. There's no mention of them in the Blotto website. Also, there was some Blotto records among the tubs 'o records that were being sold last Saturday, but I didn't pick them up because 1. I already had them on CD & 2. I wanted others to pick up on the brilliance that is Blotto.

It's good to see someone out in Mass keeping the Blotto flame alive! Some forget what great satirists (a la Bonzo Dog) they were. There was even an R. Crumb reference in "...Lifeguard" ("Out-of-it, dull-witted fool").

Dave Maswick (Chevrolet) is a dean and information officer at Bard College in the Hudson Valley; he still makes solo albums on the side and plays with a band (I forget the name) in the Woodstock area.

Helena Binder (Blanche) is a pretty big deal in the opera world. She is a director and choreographer...I remember her doing a production near here at the Glimmerglass Opera a few years back.

ALSO: to complete the Albany incestuous family tree--Maswick played in Albany band Jeannie Smith and the Hurricanes (rock&roll/rockabilly) with Eddie Angel in the early '80s. Eddie Angel, as some may know, went on to become the masked inheritor of the guitar instro, getting a Grammy nomination in 2004 and playing Conan O'Brien 7 times with Los Straitjackets, one of my favorite bands of all-time. He's also one of the humblest, nicest guitar genuises on the planet.
