By the way, I vote for "Springsteen with Appel."

Gotta go with Landau...the first album fully of the Landau era was DARKNESS AT THE EDGE OF TOWN, and I think that one and NEBRASKA are Springsteen's two best.

Every time I hear "Jungleland" and then I hear any song from "Born In the U.S.A.." I shake my head at the Born In the USA hit parade. I wonder where Springsteen/Appel could have taken something like the Born In the USA album.

i dont beleive mike appel was involved in the born to run album.
i think he was only involved in the born to run song .
not sure but think it was jimmy ivoine.

got to go with landau. darkness is my favorite and actually the first album i ever had .
its hard to grasp how much appels infleunce was as a producer.

I'm not so sure how much either of these guys were "producers" in the technical, traditional, or artistic sense. I'm not even sure how much wind they put in Springsteen's sails to dictate his different directions--a lot of that might have come from Bruce himself. The answer relies upon the idea that the Appel period was free-wheeling and spontaneous and the Landau period more focused, polished, and calculated. I like the music from the Appel years better, though. They seemed more like cabinet advisors (a one-man cabinet), which I suppose is a popular way of looking at producers. I'm hesitatant to overstate their influence, though.

Plus, didn't Landau give Sticky Fingers a bad review? What's up with that?
