Favorite EP?
July 24, 2007 03:45PM
Ahhhh, those old vinyl days of EPs. Or maxi-singles, or whatever else they might have been called in any given market. Which ones do you remember most fondly?

For me, the ones that jump to mind (at the moment) are:

New Order - 1981-1982
Let's Active - Afoot
New Musik - Straight Lines
A Certain Ratio - Do the Du

I would include Black Market Clash and Live Under a Blood Red Sky, but each of those included so much music that they qualify as albums, IMO.

Mats' thread about B-sides made me think of this one.

Beaster - Sugar

I'm sure I can think of others, but that's the one that immediately comes to mind.

Another that comes readily to mind is Steve Kilbey's solo EP Narcosis. The later Narcosis+ LP created with the addition of a few songs is nice too, but it lacks the unity of the original EP.

Continuing with Kilbey, I know the Church had several EPs early in their career like Persia, Remote Luxury and Sing Songs, but I met the contents of these in album form later. I don't have strong opinions on the EPs themselves.

Luna - "Slide"
Re: Favorite EP?
July 24, 2007 10:52PM
the pretenders- forgot the name but was put out inbetween 1-2 i think.
had cuban slide, talk of the town and a live version of prescious.
u2 under a blood red sky= was almost 35 min long but they called it a ep and priced it as such which alone i find admirable , same goes for one or two clash eps as well.
steve earle n the supersuckers- cool combo and cool idea they had.
steve does one supersucker song and the superuckers cover one earle song and they do a great cover of before you make me run and one other song.
graham parker- xmas cracker- has 4 christmas songs by parker which has the usual great wit of parker. christmas is for mugs tells a story of parker buying a sexual toy and then not being able to get the thing to work and another song called soul christmas tells the story of a x mas party with all the soul stars including otis redding dressed as santa claus.

5 classics:

Husker Du - Metal Circus
Gang of Four - Another Day / Another Dollar
Urge Overkill - Stull EP
Dambuilders - Tough Guy Problem
Archers of Loaf versus The Greatest Of All Time

I believe all of these records appeared as 10" EPs and so fit the format.

"Chronic Town" - why can't I get "Chronic Town" on an expanded / remastered cd with "Murmur"?

Because the world is a cold dark place, that's why.

Oh and "Signals Calls and Marches" of course.......

Re: Favorite EP?

Yeah, getting CHRONIC TOWN bundled with MURMUR would definitely be preferable to getting it with DEAD LETTER OFFICE. But there's enough decent stuff on DEAD LETTER OFFICE that it's not such a bad thing.

I can't remember if "Living in My Limousine" & "White Sound" by Bill Nelson were on an EP or just a 12" single. Seems like there were one or two other songs on it, but I don't feel like looking it up right now. But if it's only a 12" single, go ahead and add "White Sound" to the list of great b-sides.

I seem to be the only person who liked Joe Jackson's THE HARDER THEY COME e.p., but then again, I'd never heard the original song prior to hearing Jackson's version.

Personally, I love Dead Letter Office and listen to it as much as any other R.E.M. album. Like Buck says in the liner notes: "This album is not meant to be taken seriously. Listening to it should be like browsing through a junk shop." I enjoy it thoroughly for that quality; the album as a whole always leaves a smile on my face when it finishes playing. (And not because it's over, all you smart-alecks out there.)

I also love the J.J. version of "The Harder They Come." I don't remember which I heard first, Joe's version or Jimmy Cliff's original. That would be a great EP to have re-issued, perhaps bundled with Beat Crazy.

BEAT CRAZY just got reissued a couple of months ago, and doesn't include THE HARDER THEY COME, which does seem like a big missed opportunity.

Re. DEAD LETTER OFFICE- I've been on an REM bender the past few weeks, and have come to the profound conclusion that those guys like(d) goofing off. Which is why DEAD LETTER OFFICE- works (for me, at least).

There's a lesson in there somewhere.

Yeah, I saw the Beat Crazy reissue, and was surprised that it didn't include any bonus material. A&M did better than that, with the reissues of Look Sharp! and I'm the Man.
Re: Favorite EP?

The Kinks Did Ya EP was tighter & better than the subsequent Phobia album.
Re: Favorite EP?
July 28, 2007 01:35AM
Trip Shakespeare - Volt
Oh OK - Wow
U2 - Wide Awake In America (Under a Blood Red Sky gets all the love, but Wide Awake had 2 new songs that were pretty good, and 2 live tracks that were better)
Big Country - Wonderland
Re: Favorite EP?
July 28, 2007 05:34PM
Furthermore What is definitely better overall, but Wow is just so amateurish (in good, K Records kind of way) that I find it very endearing.
