Re: Best of the B's

Best of the B's
July 22, 2007 08:04PM
The two songs with the most plays on my Ipod in recent weeks are "Mersey Paradise" by the Stone Roses and "Needle Hits E" by Sugar. Both B sides. (The Sugar song however is the all time number 1 smash in the cool universe of my imagination).

Figuring I may as well add in some more stuff. I mean there's obvious "best b-side ever" tunes like "Acquiesce" by Oasis but I'm sure there's a bunch I would never think of unless they're mentioned to me, so ...........what are some of the best B's?

Every single by the Buzzcocks could have been a double-a side. The b-sides were usually as good as the a was.

Adam and the Ants had a tendency for the b-side to actually be better than the a-side, at least in the case of "Christian D'Or" (b-side to the dreadful "Prince Charming") and "Beat My Guest" (b-side to the dopey but kind of fun "Stand and Deliver.")

"Ultra-Suede" by Matthew Sweet is a really catchy B-side with some great fret-work by Richard Lloyd. Very T-Rex'y

New Order has other goodies too:

"Lonesome Tonight"
"1963'

I have always been partial to The Cure's "Man inside my mouth"

Another Sugar B-side that's pretty great:

"Armenia City in the Sky" (Who cover, with David Barbe on vox)

Nine Inch Nails, "Get Down, Make Love" (Queen cover)

George Harrison, "Isn't It a Pity"

REM, "Walter's Theme"

Squeeze, "Squabs on the Forty Fab"

Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine, "Absolutely Alf Garnett"

The Beat, "Stand Down, Margaret"

Crowded House, "Recurring Dream"

Beastie Boys, "Dis Yourself in '89 (Just Do It)"

"My City Was Gone"-The Pretenders

"Damned on 45"-Captain Sensible (I believe it was the B-Side to a 12' version of "Wot" which found the good Captain swearing his head out in the fadeout)
