Rolling Stone Summer of Love Issue

I was filled with dread when I saw that the current issue of Rolling Stone was a retrospective on the Summer of Love. "Oh goodie," I thought (well, I probably didn't actually think the word "goodie") "More 60s deification." But to my surprise, I've actually been enjoying the hell out of it. So it occurs to me that I don't mind RS's 60's nostalgia all that much - it's easily what they do best. When they just embrace the fact that they're the rock & roll version of Good Ole Days magazine (is that magazine even published anymore? my granny used to subscribe to it when I was a wee little shaver), the results can be pretty enjoyable.

EDIT: Ha! It is still published!

Haven't chcecked out the current issue but usually the problem with RS is their weirdo insistence on a "canon"- a defined set of Wenner classics (?) we're all supposed to agree on.

At my friends house last week there was a passionate, and heated discussion of just where "You're Gonna Miss Me" should rank among the best singles of the 60s. It was alot of fun and everybody got insulted and screamed at each other.

Unfortunately RS can't inspire that kind of wonderful childish mayhem since the tone of the magazine is always built around a set core of artists from each decade.

No coloring outside the lines.

No fun.

I imagine the Summer of Love issue is right in their comfort zone and will not be a bummer.....er, to use the appropriate vernacular.

Funnily enough, the first Elevators album is on their list of 40 best albums of '67.

CORRECTION: It's EASTER EVERYWHERE on the list, not the first album.
