from a reader named Jeff:

I am searching for two songs by Simon Bonney that seem impossible to find. The songs are, "Lonely Stars" (both the instrumental and vocal version) and "Water's Edge" which were listed in the credits of the 1996 film, "Underworld". The song "Lonely Stars" was also listed in the credits of the 1999 film, "Sugar Town." Mute records (Mute Song Ltd.) was listed as the record label. I've searched everywhere online and locally but can't find anyone who sells the CD or album containing these songs. Can you please help?

Dear Ira,

have you received any help for your quest? Have you been able to find Water's edge? For the last 5 years I've been trying to find it, but never succesfully.

The songs were planned on a new album 'eyes of blue' in 2000, but is never released. The last five years nobody heard of Simon Bonney. You are right: waters edge and lonely stars are great. You want these songs?

It might be worth trying the folks at Laughing Outlaw Records. He's not one of their's but I reckon they could point you in the right direction.

All of this begs the question: what the heck happened to Mr. Bonney anyway?

I agree. Is Simon Bonney retired?

Googling his name produces a fan site, but it's in French.

The Wikipedia has this to say:

"Bonney returned to live in Australia with his wife Bronwyn and their children."

I guess he's a full time dad now.

In March this year he played at the Sun Ra Tribute "Brainville" at Dizzy's in Richmond, Melbourne. Can his career get anymore eclectic?

His day job is as a fundraiser for non-profits. But yes, he resurrected Crime & the City Solution a few years ago for an excellent reunion record, and has since released the best-of PastPresentFuture, which anthologizes his solo albums and includes some tracks from the unreleased Eyes of Blue. Glad to know he's still making music when the fancy strikes him.

A mate of mine who lives in Paris says he's going to see Crime and the City Solution this year. Maybe they will add US dates.
