Brief Moments Of Displacement:

caused by hearing a song in a public establishment that one would normally hear either on a station or at a club with "unconventional" music agendas.

My most recent example(yesterday):
My Ever Changing Moods[Paul Weller]....while perusing the candy aisle at the A&P supermarket. Some months ago I was dumbfounded by Kate Bush's King Of The Mountain" blaring through the very same soundsystem.

In the past:
Oh Baby[Siouxsie And The Banshees]....Fleet Bank lobby
Bluebeard[Cocteau Twins]....CVS Pharmacy
Strange Kind Of Love&Cuts You Up[Peter Murphy].....JC Penney's....which used to have monitors in one of their clothing sections that played videos. I managed to catch Beautiful Friend[Cranes], Sisters Of Avalon[Cyndi Lauper] and Yaz(oo)'s "Don't Go".
New York, New York[Nina Hagen]...blasting from a Merry Go Round clothing store.

j0hn.......

I've been hearing "My Ever Changing Moods" on muzak systems for many years now. Not much of a surprise there; it wasn't that "unconventional" to begin with.

What was more surprising was hearing the Cocteaus' "Sugar Hiccup" on the PA in my neighborhood Safeway yesterday morning.

And I've heard "Blitzkrieg Bop" in King Soopers. I suppose that once a song appears in a TV spot, it becomes fair game for the Muzak vampires. I'm sure The Cramps' "New Kind of Kick" is blaring away in a supermarket somewhere, even as I type these words.

I heard a muzak version of Nick Drake's "Northern Sky" in the Arnot Mall in Horseheads, NY (near Elmira) in 1999. I still remember the year because it was such a displacing experience.

I was in this very chrome and glass-like harbourside yuppie bar on a weekday afternoon and the staff have put on The Specials best of which was all well and good but it had the un-edited version of The Boiler which includes Rhoda Dakar's screaming rape scene. The punters looked pretty freaked out but to their credit, the staff kept it on (which was good 'cos War Crimes was next and I like that freaky 3/5 beat).

Forgot to add "Coming Up Roses" by Curve at a Pizzeria Uno in Philly.

And a muzak version of Yaz's "Only You" at a dept. store.

I once heard "Dead End Street" by the Kinks blasting out of a monster pickup truck.

the Starbucks in the mall (which is 2 stores down from the Starbucks in Barnes and Nobles) played "The Booker Tease" and "Hello Skinny" from the Residents. The weird part was that is was mixed in with the usual Norah Jones, Jack Johnson, John Mayer coffee tunes muzak they play. I even asked the coffee attendant what was playing and got the usual "I don't know".
