The most un-rock & roll song about rock & roll
April 03, 2007 06:40PM
Listening to the 70s pop station online right now, and they're playing "Rock and Roll Heaven" by the Righteous Brothers, and I'm thinking there has never been a more un-rock & roll song about rock & roll. But I could be wrong.

How 'bout "I'm a Little bit Country (and I'm a Little Bit Rock & Roll)"?

Billy Joel "Still Rock'n'Roll To Me"

Kris Kristofferson "Blame It On The Stones" (about blaming society's ills on rock groups like the Rolling Stones - hey, he was down with the kids)

"We Will Rock You." Thump-thump-THUMP!! Thump-thump-THUMP!!

That doesn't rock me, it gives me a headache. More like a goose-step march than rock & roll. (The full band version that Queen used to play live was much better.)

Kicks by Paul Revere and the Raiders.

Wow, about half the songs on Madis' list are unfamiliar to me. Those are songs I'm either going to have to seek out ... or need to avoid like the plague. (Or for that matter, like Stevie Nicks and Pussycat Dolls records.)

There's "Rock and Roll Lullabye" by BJ Thomas, which I actually like ever since it first hit the charts back in 1972, when I was a mere lad o' ten

David Essex' "Rock On" is pretty un-rock&roll

I wouldn't say that Wilco's Heavy Metal Drummer is un-rock-and-roll but it is definitely un-heavy-metal. Especially considering that the lyric is kind of a poem to metal.

Twisted Sister's "I Believe in Rock n Roll", which somehow manages to suggest that true Rock & Roll is a kind of fascist conformity and disturbingly presents the idea that to really love Rock & Roll, you have to perform the sacrament of marriage with it.............. - in the immortal words of Bart Simpson : set your faces to stun.

Still, it's like "Sister Ray" compared to some of the numbers on this list!

In grade school, I came home and (oddly) told my parents I hated David Essex. My dad promised he'd teach me to deal with a bully, after supper.
------------
I'm hedging that Twisted Sister really didn't have much message intended; that it kinda fell together in an obvious way.

"Dude lets write one based on the pledge of allegiance! All of our fans have to say that every day so they're already familiar with it! It'll be the ultimate metal anthem! We'll even add in marriage vows for our fans that already own Camaros!"
"Killer idea dude, but what rhymes with 'hard'?"

On the other hand, a half dozen of the rockin' ones:

The Mekons - "Memphis, Egypt"
Mott the Hoople - "All the Way From Memphis"
Velvet Underground - "Rock and Roll"
Led Zeppelin - "Rock and Roll"
Ultravox - "Rokwork"
Nick Lowe - "They Called It Rock (Shake and Pop)"

You can't forget the grandaddy of the rockin' ones, "Rock and Roll Music" by Chuck Berry & the Beatles

"Long Live Rock"
Re: The most rock & roll song about radio

So what is the greatest song about listening to the radio?

Modern Lovers - "Roadrunner"
VU - "Rock and Roll"
Ramones - "Rock & Roll Radio"

("Radio Radio" doesn't count, as it's all about radio sucking. And "I Love Rock & Roll" is about the jukebox)
Re: The most rock & roll song about radio

Any song that shares a list with "Roadrunner" is probably going to lose to that one.

One of my favorite songs about rock & roll isn't a rocker, but is still a great song: "Rock & Roll Fantasy" by the Kinks (not to be confused with the Bad Company [ptui] song of the same name).

"Dan is a fan and he lives for our music
It's the only thing that gets him by
He's watched us grow and he's seen all our shows
He's seen us low and he's seen us high
Oh, but you and me keep thinking
That the world's just passing us by"

I feel like Homer Simpson after missing out on the Jonathan Richman & Kinks songs (D'oh!), but another song that comes to mind is "It Will Stand" by General Johnson & the Showman, later covered by Jonathan Richman

End of The Century owns this category. Two of the best Rock songs about Rock ever.
