There are five levels in the "Order of the British Empire." The two highest levels are regarded as knighthood -- Knight Grand Cross and Knight Commander. Only British citizens named to one of those two levels get to call themselves "Sir" or "Dame."

Bono and Bob Geldof, being Irish, don't qualify as "Sirs" even though they've been knighted. Neither does Sting, because he was named to the third level; he's not a knight.

Neither do any of the Americans who've received knighthood -- Bill Gates, Billy Graham and Steven Spielberg, to name just three.
