i think these kinds of questions truly give you an opportunity to learn something about yourself. For example: until this very moment I had no idea that I find Journey one small iota more tolerable than Sarah M.

On the question of Wham! and Eurythmics, I went with a complicated algorithm: George Michael's latter solo work ain't bad and DC Lee once sang backup for Wham! before going to the style council and marrying Weller. (Means nothing of course, but when you're backed into a corner with an unanswerable question, you arrive at a conclusion via unorthodox means.)

Oh, come on: PJ sucks alright, but they're nowhere close to the heinousness of the goddamn Spin Doctors. This is like the Journey/Maclachlan one where it actually was an eye opener to discover that there are quite a few bands I find more odious than ones I previously thought were the bottom of the barrel.

I've tried to like Pearl Jam. Really I have. My friends like them. My wife likes them. But every time I hear them, all I can think of is "sludge". They're like the indie-rock version of Hootie and the Blowfish.

I guess maybe, yeah, if you're comparing them to the SPIN DOCTORS, it's still not THAT hard a choice, but Pearl Jam is just one of those bands where lots of other people (apparently) hear something that eludes me completely.

Speaking of which, The Cure vs. Hootie & the Blowfish was also not particularly easy for me. I ultimately voted for The Cure because they do have one song that I like, but most of the rest of their repertoire is nearly intolerable for me. I'm sure they've got lots of fans around here, probably more than Pearl Jam, but they've always been one of the most useless (and inexplicably popular) "indie" bands for me, right up there with Depeche Mode. I think both of those bands picked up fans largely by default as they survived longer and longer and most of their contemporaries disappeared.

Some of the matchups make me sad, like Little Feat vs. The Clash. I love Little Feat, but there's no way I'm not voting for the Clash. Same thing with Devo vs. P-Funk (less of a no-brainer about which way to vote, actually).

On the other hand, It makes me smile to think that the Meat Puppets are beating Fall Out Boy. Is that a mistake? Is there some other band called the Meat Puppets?

i just about broke my mechanism trying to figure out the barenaked ladies vs. portishead category. There couldn't be two bands that I'm more lukewarm and neutral about. It came down to where I'd want to go more, Bristol or Toronto?

can we all jump in and push Jeff Beck past Death cab for Cutie? Please? Just on principle? Just for the Yardbirds and that Gene Vincent thing he did?

clarification on my end: I was agreeing with the love of Beck's solo work as well. I love the Y'birds, obviously. But I love the early solo stuff too. Michael Baker will have to defend himself against the Jedi, Ira, on this one.

That one wasn't hard for me. I've never had anything against Pearl Jam, and I think Vs was a really good album.

Stone Temple Pilots vs. Matchbox20 was pretty dismaying, until I actually thought about it and realized that even though I'm no STP fan, just the realization that I share the same planet with Rob Thomas is enough to make me look for cyanide. So in light of that, clicking the button for STP actually became a pleasure.

I voted for Wire on the basis of their having not just one but three periods of greatness, as opposed to MBV's two great albums then pfffftttt. So I did my part for Wire, but wasn't devastated to see MBV whupping up on them. They're all good folks.

i think Beck Ola is the hardest shit i know

The Replacements and ABBA are virtually tied, with ABBA usually slightly ahead.

Beck is murdering the P Furs, which irritates me, as does the fact that Faith No More is dispatching Stereolab with little problem.

I don't think they have a strict rule about putting contemporary artists against each other, but I think the contest would be more interesting if they did. While not as earth-shattering as Aretha vs. Sam, the Joan Jett vs. Tom Petty matchup seems odd for the first round.

Rush vs. Mars Volta seems odd because the bands are so similar stylistically.

To paste an image into a post, first find the location (URL) of the image file (not the page that contains it) on the internet. In Windows, using Firefox, you right-click on the image and choose "Properties" or "Copy Image Location" from the popup menu. With other browsers or other operating systems, you probably do something similar.

Then, once you have the URL for the image in question, put it in your post, surrounded by tags like this:

[ img]http://cache.gawker.com/assets/resources/2007/04/new-balance-joy-division-1-1-thumb.jpg[/img ]

Except don't put any spaces inside the brackets [].

TV vs Ramones was the hardest one. A real sophie's choice there. I went with TV but most are taking the Ramones (sigh).

Smokey and Dylan was kinda ironic given that Dylan is on record calling Smokey the greatest living american poet. Dylan will win that fight though.

That was my first thought, but I realized that I really LIKE Costello's music a lot more than the VU. I still listen to Elvis almost daily but haven't gone through a serious VU phase in years.

There definitely have been several instances where I had to debate between "who's the better band" or "who do I listen to more often" or "who's more historically important", and my approach varied a lot. Ultimately, on this one, I voted for VU, even though I listen to EC a lot more and would probably say I like his music better than VU. Hard to explain why now....

There was something on the website, though (of course I can't find it now), that said that you were supposed to vote for who you like better, not "who's most important" or "who's a better musician" or anything like that.

For the first time in this poll, I am at a loss. I thought there was no musical act I hated more than the Beach Boys, then I remembered Simon and Garfunkel. Then I thought there was no musical act I've ever hated more than S&G, momentarily forgetting that there were Beach Boys. I feel like Jack Nicholson in "Prizzi's Honor", and think I'll go lie down.

I like AFI. They remind me of the Damned circa THE BLACK ALBUM.

I had a vague notion that AFI might be some Blink 182 bullshit, but a quick perusal of their Allmusic page leads me to believe they might be less shitty than that. They have managed to escape my radar and, notwithstanding my love for the Damned, it doesn't really sound like my cup of tea. In any event, as Reno notes, they ain't no goddamn Ramones.

Their punk-pop sound is intrinsic with east bay punk - more Green Day than Rancid - but because they're from Mendocino county, high-test skunk injects a vibe (at least on the earlier stuff). Somewhat less formulatic, add in a southern-cal goth (Kommunity FK, Savage Republic, Christian Death) element. The kids all own (and they are a kids band, natch) Sing the Sorrow and the new one but, not one to glorify the overtly mature, major-label-polished stuff, I prefer Black Sails and Art of Drowning from the days when they were labelmates of the Damned. Better than Sum 41 (no, not Blink 182) but not as good as Hot Water Music and certainly no Rancid imo. There's just enough of the best elements of hardcore to keep it from from derailing into the future-frat locker row. They remain one of the biggest punk bands of all time in terms of sales, tours, output and fanbase. Not one to own much of their stuff, I've accidently seen them live several times and not once did they disappoint.

With the bandmadness site, looks like somebody wrote a script for AFI votes. Easy to do. Also easy to throw up an indie-vote blog as an alternative to that site. Go do it.
