Yes, indeed, it's the "Police On My Back" Equals (which is included, by the way) & I found it in a bargain bin last summer in a FYE store at my local mall which has since gone out of business.

I spent my commutes to/from work listening to a compendium of Ida tracks (morning) and Lloyd Cole (evening). Yay for iPods.

Wow, The Brains - "Money Changes Everything"

I've NEVER heard that original.

Was listening to the Green Pajamas last night on the way home from work, just played Le Jardin de Heavenly, and now am listening to some podcasts.

When I saw the reference to The Brains above, it made me hunger to hear that song as well! I used to listen to the Cyndi Lauper version over and over again on a Fisher Price turntable when I was 8. Greil wrote a great article on it for one of his books:

Discussing the Brains just caused me to discover there's no entry for the Georgia Satellites on this site, which is mildly surprising. I guess they could be considered a borderline band for inclusion, but it seems to me they'd probably be on the inclusion side of the line.

In '90 I saw the Georgia Satellites opening for the Replacements in Nashville, billed as the Famous Unknowns. If it wasn't the GS officially, they had Dan B. and Rick R.

So in my mind, at least, they belong.

They played whiskeyed-up versions of Matchbox (Perkins) and Let it Bleed. For the Mats, only Paul was soused, so pretty good show, musically. It was around Dont Tell a Soul, so they were acting and looking a bit MTV for my taste and the place was packed with frat dudes from Vanderbilt.

As I write this, I'm sitting in a café in a small town in the interior of Alaska — the only place in town with wireless Internet. The local FM station is on the PA; it's the only station for at least 60 miles, according to the café owner. And its playlist is pretty eclectic. I've heard several modern pop, indie, hip-hop and techno artists, mixed with classic rock, R&B, funk and '80s new wave. If this station were in my city in Colorado, I'd be glad to listen to it.

That's a funny thing about radio stations in remote areas. So many people assume that in a bigger city, you can hear a wider variety of music on the radio. And that's true — up to a point — if you keep changing the station. A large city will have more radio stations, sure, but each one is likely to have a narrow playlist. In an isolated spot like this town in Alaska, there are far fewer advertising dollars to compete for, so a station is much more likely to embrace a wide-ranging playlist. (This probably won't come as a revelation to the astute posters on this board.)
