Sugar full tour dates

After selling out 3 nights in NYC and 2 nights in London, I guess the band thinks there's enough demand for a tour. Though, playing at the Anthem seems a bit optimistic. Dates:

Sep 11th | Minneapolis, MN – First Avenue
Sep 26th | San Francisco, CA – The Warfield
Sep 30th | Los Angeles, CA – Palladium
Oct 8th | Detroit, MI – Masonic Jack White Cathedral Theatre
Oct 9th | Cleveland, OH – Agora Theatre
Oct 10th | Pittsburgh, PA – Stage AE
Oct 12th | Philadelphia, PA – Union Transfer
Oct 13th | Philadelphia, PA – Union Transfer
Oct 14th | Washington, DC – The Anthem
Oct 16th | Brooklyn, NY – Brooklyn Steel
Oct 17th | Boston, MA – Roadrunner
Oct 18th | Hudson, NY – Basilica Hudson
Oct 20th | Cincinnati, OH – MCL Pavilion (Indoors)
Oct 21st | Nashville, TN – Brooklyn Bowl

Ha, we posted at the same time in two separate threads.

Playing at the Paramount in Seattle seems a trifle optimistic too. But then, if the guys weren't optimistic, they would've stayed at home.

The site shows that Sugar is booked for plenty of other shows in the UK and Europe, in May and June. Plus a Denver show in August, a few days before the Seattle date.

We might just plan a trip back to Colorado in mid-August. The Mission Ballroom is a relatively new venue in Denver; it opened seven years after our move to the PNW, so we never attended a show there.

We received the code word for the pre-sale, and looked into tickets for Sugar's gig in Seattle. They start at $95 for balcony seats.

So we talked about it, and agreed that we're willing to give this one a pass. We saw Sugar in the Nineties, which was great ... and we've seen Bob Mould three times with Jason Narducy and John Wurster as his rhythm section. (And what a great rhythm section they are!) The first time we saw that trio was one of our earliest Seattle shows, with Bob observing the twentieth anniversary of Copper Blue. That show was outstanding.

We suspect this decision may be kind of the turning point, in our pursuit of live music experiences. There are really very few artists or bands left on our bucket list.

I went to nights 2 & 3 and it was awesome. Same setlist I think, all Sugar with no covers, but night 3 had three surprise guests on the final numbers: Patterson Hood, Craig Finn and Jason Narducy. (I met Hood on night 2 too, which was impressive - he posted about seeing a Waxahatchee & MJ Lenderman show in Oregon the previous night, so he basically flew cross country the next day to see Sugar! FYI David produces the Drive-by Truckers, but it was still a surprise to see Hood. Really nice and approachable guy, I'm a big fan of DBT's as well and Hood's solo album from last year was fantastic.)

I also didn't realize how loud the show actually was until night 3 - both me and a friend arrived after the DJ set already ended, so instead of being eased into that volume level, we were dropped into it. They rarely stopped between numbers unless they had something to say, so most of those 90 minutes rushed by in a continuous, bruising wave. I didn't realize Malcolm fell when his seat tipped backward 40 minutes into night 1's set, so he was probably still recuperating from that on night 2, but he looked like he was in much better shape on night 3.

They'll be back in NYC on Bob's birthday, this time at Brooklyn Steel. One of the best shows I ever saw was at Brooklyn Steel with Bob in his trio with Narducy and Jon Wurster - I think it was his first full-on tour after Grant Hart's passing, and the setlist covered his entire career including a generous helping of Hüsker Dü. (His latest record was also my favorite of the Mould/Narducy/Wurster albums, Sunshine Rock.) That was a special show because he did an extra long set with several extra songs - I think the longest on the tour - and he never left the stage. Before the encore, he sat on the drum riser, with his hands clasped in front of his mouth, then he got up and kicked off the encore with Grant's "Never Talking to You Again" before the other two came back.

I was at night three too! If I had known I would have tried to track you down. I will write my notes down later, but in brief, I think Hood/Finn/Narducy were there partly as devoted fans and admirers, but also to spare Bob Mould's vocal cords a bit. There were also a fair number of David Barbe-sung numbers, a higher proportion in concert than there are on the actual Sugar records.

More later, but glad I made the trip (and in particular, glad I saw Sugar in this venue and not at the cavernous Anthem in DC, where I worry their sound and impact will be lost in the enormous space).

I think you're right about that. He sounded fine after night 2, but he was a little hoarse after night 3's show.

Before this reunion was even announced, Bob was pretty upfront that past 60, there's no way he can push his voice like he did in the 20s without taking extra care, so he does a lot to rest his voice and hydrate himself in order to bounce back for the next show. Performing three days in a row at top volume is probably a tall order, and he's going to repeat that a couple times in the upcoming schedule, so cutting down his singing time is understandable.

Rush toured that way, for the last ten years of their touring life: no shows booked two days in a row, not even in the same city. (Of course, they could afford to schedule in the off days.) They'll be sticking to that practice on the upcoming tour.

Oh I would def expect that! Husker Du might have been the loudest thing I have ever experienced. Over 40 years ago and I think my ears are still ringing.
