Neil Young covers

Neil Young covers

Neil Young has such deep influences in a wide array of music that I'm rarely surprised to hear a cover of one of his songs by a rock band, country artist, or even pop — St. Etienne! — but wow was I surprised to hear a chillwave/light EDM version of "Harvest Moon" just now in a Starbucks. (I had to stop and get on my laptop for work meetings while doing errands.)

I guess this came out first in 2012?

Poolside, "Harvest Moon"

What are some other unexpected Neil covers?

From Neil's HUMAN HIGHWAY, here's a clip of him performing "Hey Hey My My" with Devo.

Yeah, St. Etienne was the first that came to mind - that techno-dance version of "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" was baffling.

late-period Roxy Music, in their most lush "adult-contemporary" (that is: least rockin) phase, seemed unlikely to pull off "Like A Hurricane," but they did. Sorta.

I had no idea Roxy Music did a Neil Young cover!

Austin alt.jazz (yes, that's apparently a thing now) combo Nori covered "Old Man" on their recent album (which is terrific, by the way).

Here.

Nori's singer/lyricist is Akina Adderley, granddaughter of bebop/hard bop-era trumpeter Nat Adderley and grandniece of saxophone great Cannonball Adderley.

Not necessarily unexpected but the Pixies cover of "Winterlong" is great.

Three favorites:

Patti Smith covered "After the Gold Rush" for Banga. (IMHO her best album since her first three - excellent.) Also saw her open for Neil Young & Crazy Horse and she did indeed perform this.

Emmylou Harris made "Wrecking Ball" the title track to what may be her best album.

One of the Isley Brothers' greatest covers fused "Ohio" with "Machine Gun."

Wow, that Isleys track was heavy. Pretty great.

When I saw Neil the other night, he did indeed perform "Ohio." Guess he doesn't feel that it's dated. And he played it coming right out of "Southern Man." Young has more righteous fury in him than most so-called punks.

Wrecking Ball is an incredible record. The title track isn't my favorite on the record, but it's a great album.

"The Needle and the Damage Done" - Duran Duran?!? Oh gawd, NO!

just had an involuntary reaction when I read that. Like when I found out that was Christina Aguilera covered John Lennon's "Mother."

Fab, your comment sparked my curiosity ...

According to Secondhand Songs, three artists have covered The Police's song "Mother"!

The blurbs about two of those artists describe them as "experimental." I guess if you're going to tackle a song like "Mother" and try to make something out of it, that would qualify as an "experiment" for sure.

Oh cool, so I'm not the only one who likes that song!

For a truly unexpected but successful example, allow me to shed all hipster cred and hear Nicolette Larson’s “lotta love” one more time.
