R.I.P. Brent Hinds of Mastodon

Hinds, 51, died late on Wednesday after his Harley-Davidson collided with a BMW SUV whose driver did not yield while making a turn.
What a sad few months.

This sucks. I'm not much of a metal head, but as Toland points out in his Mastodon entry here, their reach extended far beyond the normal bounds of metal. I only had a couple of their albums, but I definitely liked what I heard.

This just a few months after a nasty breakup with the band. A real shame.

This really is sad. I'd largely stopped paying attention to them these days, but still enjoy those early albums quite a bit. They got a little too anthemic/vocal-centric for me at some point.

And yeah, his departure from the band was pretty ugly, though I was glad to see that the rest of the band took the high road after his passing and had nothing but kind words about him.

I've played the song "Once More 'Round the Sun" on my show a couple times -- once as a tribute to Brett on his birthday. Needless to say, I'll have to seek out a more appropriate Mastodon song for his requiem. Rest in peace, rocker.
