RIP Bobby Whitlock

For a brief period, he was a pretty great collaborator in rock, with a prominent role in Delaney & Bonnie's band, followed by contributions to George Harrison's All Things Must Pass and above all Derek & the Dominos/Eric Clapton's Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. He also appeared, credited and uncredited, on quite a few others (The Rolling Stones' Exile on Main Street).

He and his wife Coco moved here to Austin in 2006 and held down a weekly residency at a local club for 15-odd years. They moved outside the city to a small town after Whitlock retired. I never saw him play. I imagine the Austin Chronicle will have a piece on him in a few days.

The Derek & the Dominos record that Whitlock co-captained is the only album that overcomes my general loathing of Eric Clapton.
