Heh, I had an audio tape of that in the '80s. Guess a bootleg had been floating around for a while. Never actually saw the video tho, thanks.

Did Patti REALLY like that song? It does warm the heart tho to see a buncha little kids screaming over...Patti Smith. ("Yaaayyy!!!")

That has to go rank up there with David Bowie showing up on Bing Crosby's Xmas special. I was a couple of years older than the target audience for that show back when it aired but I'm sure I would said "who the hell is that?" Hey, give them credit for the inspired casting. Best part is that she is followed by Count Dracula and Adam Rich!

I don't find that as weird, since Bowie was always, at heart, an old-time cabaret performer.

That was beautiful......I especially like her joy in the performance.

No smugness, no hip ironic commentary or "deconstruction" of the song........that tape should be shown to every "we're too cool to mean it (man)" band out there today.

I remember seeing David Johansen and Dwight Twilley on some Saturday morning kid show - don't recall the name, but I think it was hosted by Kelly Monteith, a long-forgotten standup comic. My favorite part was during the Johanson Q&A when some tike asked him what his favorite song he had written was and he said "Swaheto Woman" and all the kids in the audience nodded sagely like they had some clue what the hell he was talking about.

The weirdest one was seeing Joe Jackson on some saturday morning show. He did "On the Radio" and either "I'm the Man" or "It's Different for Girls." I thought "Radio" was especially surreal, to see a guy on kid's show performing such a bitter rant about fame being the best revenge. Seemed like an odd lesson for the kiddies. Not that "I'm the Man" or "Different for Girls" are particularly uplifting messages for young minds, either.

I think "I'm the Man" should be required curriculum in every elementary school in the country:
You think you're immune, but I can sell you anything
Anything from a thin safety pin to a porkpie hat!

That and MAD Magazine.
