R.I.P. Sal Maida

Shocked to hear this but I just saw Steve Wynn’s post about Sal Maida. Per Sal’s Facebook page, he passed away from complications due to a fall.

I’ve seen him play quite a few shows around NYC including the Lou Reed tribute at Lincoln Center where he was part of a house band that included Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth, and of course he was at the Trouser Press birthday celebration. Gone too soon.

Sparks,The Runaways, Roxy Music, founding member of Milk n Cookies…not to shabby a résumé.

Evan “Funk” Davies of WFMU wrote “… last March, at the Trouser Press celebration at Bowery Electric, my eyes were truly opened to how brilliant a musician Sal was. He was part of a one-off group that Dennis Daken put together that also included Dave Amels and Mike Fornatale, none of whom are musical slouches. Given how busy all of those guys are I figured they didn't have many rehearsals together, nor did they need them. They played a set of a dozen or so covers from the '60s and '70s, and understandably all the guys in the band had either printed or digital (i.e. iPad) notes at hand to remind them, presumably, of chords, words, etc. All of them *except* Sal, that is, who played every single song with seemingly effortless aplomb, completely unassisted. It was a mind-blowing moment, and I'm glad I was there to see it.”
