I like Lou Reed a lot.
Ever since I was ten in 1972, walking down my neighborhood street in Miami., Fla.
I heard it.
Yep, the song blasted out from a neighbors house and into my ears. And I took my first walk on the wild side.
To be fair, I reckon I was initially exposed , subliminally you might say, when, a year or two before, (early '71) my Ma took me to a local Tom Mcan shoe store. I pulled open the doors, walked in and heard the coolest music ever.
Well, at least since that time my friend's brother, home from the Vietnam war, played "A Day in the Life" while I hid during a game hide & seek in "67.
I'm sure I've shared that story with you before.
Fast forward six decades and four years, I still remember and feel the sunshine chorus of "Who Loves the Sun" .
I wanted everyone to shush and listen to the music, and I feverishly asked anyone within earshot of me what, and who,. was the name of the band or song that was playing? I really could care less about cramming my feet into a pair of $8.00 desert boots. But it pissed me off that no one knew, and no one could tell me about the music I was hearing.
Around that time, I had another friend, Michael Grant. Mike had access to his older brothers records and stereo system. But, I don't think his brother was away in the war, because he seemed nervous when he put on the WHO-SELL OUT and cued up only "I Can See for Miles"
But that did it for me, hook, line & sinker. It was the loudest and most exciting music I had ever heard.
This...and these experiences, led me to discover Trouser Press.
