Surf's up ... unless it's down

Surf's up ... unless it's down

We're on vacation this week in British Columbia, staying in a beachfront cabin. The weather is, of course, typical for the Pacific Northwest in November: cold, gray, frequently rainy, almost always overcast. Even the sand on the beaches is a dark brownish-gray.

The other day, we were in a local brewery sampling the fare. They had a playlist heavy on '90s shoegaze (along with a lot of its adjacent music, such as The Cure). After a few songs, my wife said, "I think shoegaze is beach music, for the kind of beaches we have here."

Jana is on to something there. After all, the Jesus and Mary Chain were one of the pioneers of the sound and their early stuff is best described as the Beach Boys stuck with Scotland weather instead of southern California.

Yes, “kill surf city” they sang.

I’ve never walked into any beer serving establishment and heard shoegaze…or anythinng TP related. I think I need to move.
